In her return we find Red Sonja, a young girl risen from the ashes of tragedy to become the most feared woman warrior of all time. The mythical red-head blindly seeks vengeance on those who destroyed her family. In her path of destruction she discovers a larger purpose for her unearthly powers: to save all Hyrkania from the villainous Kulan Gath.

"This is an amazing property and film for our company," says Nu Image/Millennium's Avi Lerner. "Working with the talented Robert Rodriguez, having Rose McGowan as Red Sonja and Douglas Aarniokoski directing is a fantastic combination. We could not be happier."

"It is our intent to take this opportunity to build on the worlds of branded entertainment with Red Sonja as well as Conan, Hercules and The Three Musketeers titles. There is history with these mythical heroes, and success," says Millennium's Boaz Davidson. "We were pleased when Joe Gatta brought us this project."

I have to wonder how much the sucsessful launch of the online Age of Conan game has to do with sparking the interest to make these kinds of movies. I mean really, we haven't seen Red Sonja or Conan in over two decades, the Age of Conan online game has turned into an unexpected hit and now all the sudden Hollywood takes an interest in bringing this genre back to life. Nevertheless, it will hopefully be fun to see what they turn out.

Oops, I almost forgot to do the usual DVDTOWN nerd comment, "I can't wait to get it on Blu-ray".

Both Conan and Red Sonja were re-launched as comic books (though not by Marvel) in the last five years to surprising, though fading, success.

Rose Mcgowan as Red Sonja is such a ludicrous choice on the surface it almost makes me wonder if it can somehow make sense. McGowan as a new Xena, I could see. As Sonja... well, it'll probably be a CGI-fest anyway. The involvement of Robert Rodriguez, however, does little to inspire faith that the production will be worth watching. Not that I'd have high hopes for any attempt at a "Red Sonja" film. She's best left to the printed page and artists who like to draw big boobs.

Rose McGowan in a chain-mail bikini will, at least, make for a collectible poster.

Chris, I think Rose McGowan is dating or married to Robert Rodriguez which explains why she keeps getting all these roles in his films recently.

They're dating, he left his wife for her while filming "Planet Terror".

Looks like Rodriguez and Rose McGowan broke up cause he couldn't get any funding for Barbarella, Red Sonja, and Woman in Chains due to her being the main star in the main films.

Apparently the studio wants Jessica Alba to take the Barbarella lead role.

Ok, apparently they're back together and the movie is still a go. The movie poster was displayed at the San Diego Comic Con today...

You can ignore that "Sucia" part on the poster.
