Kevin Smith has a little paragraph of his thoughts on the movie in quotes.
http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/06/29/kevin-smith-reviews-the-dark-knight-new-zack-and-miri-photo/
IGN gave it 5/5.
http://movies.ign.com/articles/884/884876p1.html
I feel as if this is one of those movies where I can completely absorb myself in the hype without the fear of being let down.
If it is as good as people are saying, could not only Ledger get the nod for supporting actor but the movie itself for picture of the year? If a fantasy film like Return of the King can break through, can a comic book one as well?

As a general rule, I assume that if Kevin Smith likes something, I won't.
But I'll keep an open mind in this case.

the oscars depend on a certain attitude. generally, movies that are nominated for best picture--even comedies--tend to be self-serious and self-important. (peter jackson's "lotr" certainly felt that way, especially parts 2 and 3.)
"batman begins" was self-serious, but it wasn't self-important. from the trailers and "the prestige", though, i'm getting the vibe that christopher nolan really thinks that he's one of the greatest auteurs of all time. maybe that'll be enough to get "the dark knight" into the final five.

As...interesting...as it would be for TDK to get a Best Picture nod, something tells me it's not going to happen. Why? There's a much bigger internal-Hollywood push to get Wall-E something other than a animation nomination. I just don't see the Academy giving two of five slots to "disposable" summer movies.
A posthumous supporting actor nom for Ledger is much more of a possibility. Of course, we haven't seen the other Oscar bait yet...

Well if people are out there saying that PIXAR has thrown no BALLS in movie making. Then if this movie is as good as they are saying, then you have to give Nolan the same award. This guy has thrown nothing but strikes since he began directing movies.

oh, man, when i saw "memento" years after its release, i wanted to scream at the whole world, "why does everyone like it so much???" it was such a chode piece of crap.
the story was airtight, but that doesn't mean that it was any good.
the same goes for "the prestige" the movie didn't cheat, but man, it stunk.

Batman star Christian Bale has declared he will quit the comic book movie franchise if producers ever decide to reintroduce the caped crusader's sidekick Robin.
Bale took on the role of the legendary action hero in 2005's Batman Begins and will be seen again in The Dark Knight, which is due for release later this month.
But the actor is hoping that the character of Robin is not brought back into any of future Batman movies - because he will resign in protest.
He says, "If Robin crops up in one of the new Batman films, I'll be chaining myself up somewhere and refusing to go to work."

You know, I can't blame the guy. When Robin was introduced in the other Batman movies the franchise went south. Perhaps throwing Robin into the mix is a bad omen.

Tim,
You've got to be the first person I know to not blame Schumacher first and foremost for Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. And there was nothing wrong, really, with Batman Forever. It was exactly the movie Warner wanted. Moreso for Batman & Robin.
But no, it wasn't Robin as a bad omen. It was mass tie in's and toys. Enormous talent in BF: Kilmer, O'Donnell, Jones, Carrey, Kidman. I actually like it a lot. B&R on the other hand, kinds sucks bat balls.
Jason, Chris O'Donnell..........................................................

I never said BF was a GOOD movie. It's just not the trainwreck everyone thinks it is! It's fun on a comic book, neon lights, BOOM BOOM level.
And no, I don't like Kilmer in that way. He played a good Bruce Wayne, understated and different than Michael Keaton.
Jason, Holy Rusted Metal Batman!

Batman Forever's one of the worst super-hero movies ever made. I put it right down with the crappiest TV movies or "Captain America." Batman and Robin is a masterpiece by comparison. Batman Forever has the two worst-conceived villains ever assembles - Carrey and Jones are atrocious, but it's the fault of the script and direction more than bad acting. That movie is sheer torture.
At least Ahnold was funny in Batman and Robin.

Oh come on Chris! Jim Carrey is hilarious in the way he overplays every single line. Tommy Lee Jones hams it up for the camera. From what I remember, it looked good, too. And they took a stab at getting inside Bruce's head. It's fun. (Mind you, I never said it was a GOOD movie, k?)

I thought it was more of a fun movie. Damn, that whole series of movies, was fun. It was all about the cheezy glam 60's tv series. Without the BAM!, POW!, and ZowEE!!! It was definately one perspective of Batman, that won't be revisited. People and Hollywood are looking towards a reality based series, hence the newer two films.

The first two Burton did are classic, Batman Forever is mediocre at best and Batman & Robin was Skittle vomit! There were times that BF worked for me, and it is passable as a cable stand-by movie, but bringing in the glam to something that should be serious and dark in the first place just doesn't work for me. Batman Begins and Dark Knight are a lot closer to what I would expect to see, rather than the Skittles rainbows we got with BF & B&R.

There are 30+ reviews floating around (most not yet posted on RT) and all have been positive.
I'm looking at the Wall-E reviews and 6 were negative out of 169. Sometimes I wonder if there are people out there who deliberately write up a negative review for publicity. You're not going to be recognized in a sea of "fresh" reviews, but those "rotten" reviews certainly stand out.

depression,
undoubtedly, there are some reviewers who like to be contrarians, but there are times when i wonder if there is too much "follow the sheep" in this line of work (just as with most professions). where is it written that people have to like pixar 100%?
personally, i think that pixar has made some great movies and that the technical quality is stupendous, especially when compared to the CGI garbage released by dreamworks, disney, weinstein, etc. however, many of pixar's stories tend to skew towards "middle america", and they are such inoffensive milquetoast offal that they become, paradoxically, offensive precisely because they are neutered.
eddie
p.s. i owe chris a debt of gratitude for introducing me to "milquetoast"--what a great word!

I'm worried about watching it on IMAX... I'm disappointed because they aren't showing it all in the same aspect ratio. They shot 4 specific scenes using the IMAX Cameras. Instead of upscaling the parts of the film that weren't shot in IMAX... they are just leaving them be. I guess so the audience knows what is or isn't in IMAX format but, whatever.
I'm just not sure if that's gonna bug me or not...

So what you are saying is that Nolan is a BAD director? When all his movies that were mentioned after my first comment came out, I cannot remember anyone BASHING them. I personally think that as a director, his vision is top notch. As for Memento, well I personally thought it was amazing and it took us where no other movie has taken us before. Now I look at myself as a movie freak, and I cannot remember a movie like that before. So to me it was original.
I mean he can be more like say um George Lucas, now theres a guy with a vision.

Angry Bale Was Bolted In As Batman
Christian Bale really was a brooding, angry Caped Crusader in Batman Begins - because his tight-fitting costume made him feel restricted and caged.
The movie star insisted on making some vital adjustments to the iconic batsuit for his second outing as Batman - and started with the comic book superhero's headgear.
Bale reveals his Batman Begins costume was topped off with a helmet that felt like "I was going scuba diving".
He recalls, "You couldn't move your head, you were bolted in. It was a vice on my skull, so I had a headache the whole damn time.
"I used it Batman's supposed to be full of anger and rage and I didn't have to act that."

Not only that but Michael Caine and Aaron Eckhart were both on Leno last week and said nothing but good about Heath off screen. They said he was really laid back and friendly.
The first negative review is out.
http://nymag.com/movies/reviews/48514/
David Edelstein doesn't seem to realize how serious some of the Joker storylines in the comics are. This is the guy who beat Robin to near death with a crowbar, only to later detonate the building.
I don't mean to sound like a fanboy defending a movie I haven't seen, I just don't think being dark and realistic is a legitimate gripe here.

Well I threw in Batman Begins on saturday night and watched it with the GF in anticipation of Dark Knight, man I forgot what a good movie B.B. really is. It was the third or fourth time I have seen it but we were both right into it until the very end. Great movie and if Dark Knight is on par, or any better, we're in for a real treat.

I guess is similar to Batman: Return of the Joker, where he messes up with Robin's head. BTW, that movie IS good, and I can't imagine how much better it would've been hadn't it been geared towards the younger audience...
Oh, isn't the IMAX aspect ratio closer to 16:9, hence why no black bars?

Yeah he's not a nice person.
He also paralyzed Gordon's daughter (Batgirl) by shooting her.
The Robin I spoke of was the second Robin. The first Robin Dick Grayson took on the identity of Nightwing and would eventually beat the Joker to death, only to have Batman resuscitate him.

Yeah, Joker is probably the most sickest villain ever. He not only killed the second Robin, he also killed Gordon's wife (according to the "No Man's Land" novel I read. Plus with all the other dead bodies, he's a serial killer.

Thats what I enjoyed about Batman Begins so much, that it was really the first Batman movie in which Batman was the true star.
The Dark Knight on the other hand is as much an ensemble cast as say Ocean's Eleven. Which I don't necessarily consider a bad thing.
