Interview With Sony Electronics Prez Stan Glasgow

Quote:
Looking ahead, you're only just getting into Blu-ray. How do you see the future penetration of the format compared with DVD?
Glasgow: That's a good question. DVD took 10 years to really penetrate. We're now in the second year of Blu-ray. My guess is it will probably happen a little quicker in terms of penetration. The pricing is already coming down more quickly than DVD came down. I don't think it will take as long as 10 years, but I don't think it will penetrate to the same percentage because there's a couple of conflicting forces. Certainly, people that want the best picture are going to want it, without a doubt. People that are OK with upconverting DVD players, which is somewhere close to 600, 650, maybe 700 (lines of resolution)--that's not a bad picture either. So a lot of people may be happy with an upconverting DVD player. And (Blu-ray) may not turn over, it may not penetrate to the same extent, because (DVD) was such a big medium change from tape.

But I see it being the major format. It's won the war, that's done. Now it's a matter of: Can we provide an exceptional experience? Can we provide a social part? And can we involve the overall community in, let's say, designing applets and coming up with new things that we can't even think of today?

Did you read the rest of the article? Of course not. You only read what you want to read, and then highlight certain excerpts to post here just to give us your own twisted spin on things.

I ask again. Why are you still here? Nobody cares about your posts anymore, and it's fine that you don't like Blu-ray. But if you don't like it, then keep quiet. Nobody is twisting your nipple to buy into the format, so you really need to get a life. You are so obsessed with Blu-ray it's pathetic.

Look, I don't like Bette Midler, but I certainly don't go out of my way to find Midler forums and do the idiotic stuff that you are doing. So grow up already.

I agree that Deadmeat is rather extreme in his dislike for Blu-ray, but he's allowed to express his opinion like everyone else. I'd prefer to hear the widest range of opinions on a subject, rather than just the positive. Besides, I haven't seen Deadmeat attack anyone, only the other way around.

Bruce, I see your point but when you lie (which he does and I've caught him in one) and twists the truth to support his "opinions" then that's something else. I loved Blu-ray from the time I've first seen it but you've never read a post from me that lied about HD-DVD. He only does this to get people angry which is cleary against the rules, spamming which is clearly against the rules, trolling also against the rules, and he is tring to gain notoriety by diong this on every site he joins therefore he is a shill as well. He does'nt contribute to movie, audio equipment, or any other helpfull topics. Everything is anti-Blu-ray. After I caught him in his lie I just learned not to respond to him.

Questions for Deadmeat: What is it that you want from people? Why do you post the same info about the samething? Is it that you want us to go out and buy SUC players? Do you realize that everybody here already has a upconverting player in one fashion or the other? Do you realize that we heard you after the 5th time you posted?

But he's not sharing his opinion. He's not even creating valid arguments in a positive manner. He's just doing what he's doing to be a troll, and I really hope with his latest moronic post that he's going to be finally kicked off this site. We don't need this kind of crap here.

Agreed on this 100%. Attack the topic. Discredit the statement. You attack the original poster, you get nowhere. Everybody's entitled to a say-so. After further reading subjects posted by this "Deadmeat" member- as 'unpopular' as his subjects may seem... it's nothing new or illegal in forums like this. The problems arise when other members begin to attack the poster directly. And not the posted topic itself.
A troll becomes a troll if you feed it. You don't like it... DON'T REPLY. Let's move on.

Bruce,

You're exactly right: Deadmeat can express his opinion. But as the board rules state: DVDTOWN reserves the right to remove all posts that seem blatantly to promote a studio, electronics firm, format, or other product.

Every last one of his (I presume) posts has been bashing BD in some way, shape or form. A great deal of them contain a link, followed by a quote along with a subject line taken completely out of context or, more importantly, completely false.

Various forum members have tried to use logic with Deadmeat, including myself. It did not work. If he wants to have a conversation about superupconverting, lets have a conversation, not a link, quote and then he leaves. Lets read the actual articles, as well as the others on the same topic and debate the issue. But Deadmeat doesn't want to discuss that way. He purposely posts these threads to piss people off (definition of trolling, per the board rules).

There is no substance to the first post. Only another "BD is bad" link with quotes taken out of context. Hence why I'm not debating the issue: it's useless.

This is a good example of Deadmeat's slant. Who on this forum has ever said that Blu-ray would be as successful as DVD? If Blu-ray only captured a 50% market share at some point in its life-cycle, it would be considered extremely successful. Sony's President takes a pragmatic approach, and this is news?

And, I agree about not being able to have a reasonable discussion with Deadmeat. I love a good debate, but you don't get that from him. I pointed out the flaws in his comparison of upconverting DVD player sales and Blu-ray player sales (as the % changes used completely different periods and therefore were not comparable), and all he basically would say is "those stats come straight from NPD". If Deadmeat has ever acknowledged any merit to even one counterargument on this forum, I will be SHOCKED.

guys, just a day or two ago, deadmeat started another thread to which no one (other than deadmeat himself) responded. that thread died a very quick death.

again, just don't respond to deadmeat. it's actually very funny seeing him respond to himself.

plus, if he necro-threads, then henning will ban him.

Yeah, I see your points as well. Too bad he just starts sensationalist thread titles based on twisting article comments to mean something else. He's actually pretty good at it, but unfortunately it's all for moot now and perhaps the underlying motive is just to drive some people nuts (which he also seems to be very good at doing).

Dear Lord...

This is why I don't frequent these forums anymore. All these infantile hurt feelings when people don't agree. I'm not gonna stand up for this deadmeat guy, but it sounds like the same kind of crap everyone was spewing in the whole BD/HD-DVD slogging that went on for so long. "Blu-Ray sucks!" "No, HD-DVD sucks!" Nyah, nyah...

Who cares if the guy doesn't like Blu-Ray and skews data to his own means? That's all anyone's been doing here since the whole HD format war began. Blu-Ray won... Yay... Now let's all get ready for HD downloads that will wring asunder both Blu-Ray and DVD.

I remember a time when these forums were filled with thoughtful discussions, and yes, even civil arguments about these crazy things called movies that were in theaters and on DVD. People used to be able to disagree, AND not bash one another. Now it's like every post is taken as a personal attack or chance to espouse their own rightful discontent.

Everybody getting their panties in a wad just perpetuates the cycle and takes this site further and further from what it used to, and I thought was intended to, be.

It's too bad, really, because I miss the thoughtful posts of yore...

sean (...alas, poor civility. i knew him well horatio...)

Eddie you are the man. I was laughing at that myself. It was proof that if you don't respond he'll start talking to himself. If everyone does'nt just reply just let him be he'll leave. Kinda reminds me of that Star Trek OS episode where the creature has the Klingons and the Enterprise crew fighting each until they realized what was happening stopped fighting and the alien left. Eddie, I know you know the title of that one.

That's not entirely accurate. I rip on Chris anytime I get the chance and I've been doing it for a long, long time.

You could be right guys. But rottenvegetable/ITSTHROBING said he would post disgusting images and get other people to join him in trolling the forum. This guy hasn't done that yet.

Then again maybe he has no friends to help him troll.

Actually, tucker, that's Tim's way of saying "welcome." If he doesn't tease you, he doesn't like you.
