Audio: Flat screen TVs 'contribute to global warming' (The World Today) A gas used in the making of flat screen televisions, nitrogen trifluoride (NF3), is being blamed for damaging the atmosphere and accelerating global warming.
Almost half of the televisions sold around the globe so far this year have been plasma or LCD TVs.
But this boom could be coming at a huge environmental cost.
The gas, widely used in the manufacture of flat screen TVs, is estimated to be 17,000 times as powerful as carbon dioxide.
Ironically, NF3 is not covered by the Kyoto protocol as it was only produced in tiny amounts when the treaty was signed in 1997.

ah never mind, its a bit chilly where i live
and with the cost of oil, gas and electricity going up, global warming should help us save on our energy bills.
global warming is a natural event, not man made
and i like nature and natural things.
so if i can afford it, i will place a plasma in every room.

"...global warming is a natural event, not man made."
Sounds like a Bush quote.

that maybe, but this earth has gone through many climate changes. Some extreme, others not
infact humans survived the last extreme climate change easily.(without the aid of modern construction, technology, knowledge..even without knowing what was happening)
it is funny though, that going green costs loads of money. You would think that the G8 would keep the price of saving the planet to a bare minimum.
nope
dont sound like george bush to me

The last quote from the article:
"The key to whether it's a problem or not is how much is released to the atmosphere."
Let's hope that it's not as serious as they think it is. There are so many benefits to flat screens, particularly LCDs, with savings in energy being one of the major ones.

so do cars and artics and tractors and helicopters and planes and ships and motorbikes and lawnmowers and chainsaws and hedge strimmers
so does lighting and heating the entire earth
so do cows backsides, infact any backside that releases gases or fecal matter
so does industry and education and economics and pollitics

I think that the energy the panels save equals the damage the gas makes...so there is no change, basically...
