Surprisingly, the PS3 doesn't take much more power when playing games or Blu-ray:

In the link above, the 4 page examination of the power consumption of the 3 consoles uses the old PS3. If my fridge could play Blu-ray, I probably wouldn't have a PS3. Plus my cold beer would be stashed in the HT room

You would have to be silly to leave your PS3 in idle anyways though. A better comparison would have been if you left your ps3 in the standby not idle. Or perhaps if you left your fridge door open and PS3 in idle.

Leaving it idle is silly especially with all the heat these consoles generate. Leaving it on standby means the machine is practically off, as in it's waiting for a signal to turn it on and boot up. Very surprising that it uses that much power in standby mode when it's doing nothing.

Again if it was idle that would be a different story cause the graphics are still being sent to the TV, etc.

I wouldn't call the XBox 360's 2.5 watts a lot of power while in standby. Everything's relative I suppose.
