and the UK is how much of the global home video market?

who cares, only those who dont live in the uk

point is, it is now established that blu-ray aint in competition with dvd
it is a consumer choice, do you wanna waste money on a hi-def tv and put an sd(upscaled) source through it, or do you wanna use your hd-tv for what it was designed for, if so and you wanna enjoy the pinnacle of home entertainment's hi-def picture and sound, you choose blu-ray
momentum is gathering

the uk is part of the EU we buy more music, films, games and the like, than any other continent on earth, i would think that blu-sales are up in other eu countries aswell

yeah, you guys are such a part of the EU that you still have your own currency (rather than using the euro) and non-europeans still have to get a separate visa when visiting the uk since you guys opted out of the schengen travel agreement. oops.

you didn't "colonize" most of the planet...you just messed up life for people who were already in places that you invaded.

trollboy, you're the one who dragged history and politics into a thread that you created, so no dice playing the victim.

no i didnt

you did with your uk market share crap
the thread has nothing to do with the uk's market share, simply that blu-ray sales have soared by 500% in the uk

unless of course that is rascist
dont you dare call or brand me a racist, or is saying that america was founded by brit's racist aswell, because i as we all know it is an historic fact

take your childish attidude to another thread, if you dont like the facts that this thread shows

I think that is basically the definition of competition in a business setting. Consumer choice and all.

well no you are wrong

if dvd offered full 1080p picture and 7.1 lossless audio then it would be in competition with blu-ray which offers the same

but dvd dont offer that does it

just like a ford taurus aint in competition with a newman hass indy car or a dodge viper
or the same way pick up trucks aint in competition with 2 door hatchbacks

This is your racist comment^^ because it's ignorant and plain stupid. I'm half Scottish, part German and American Indian. Eddie is American Chinese, and since we all live in America that would make us "yanks" by your point of view. America is a melting pot of all kinds of races and different ethnics. Educate yourself and come visit sometime and you'll see.

PS: What's your take on the Scottish?

half scottish, and a quarter native indian...or mixed race or whatever you are does it just say american? and the colour of your skin

im a quarter italian , bit of norwegian and a smitten of swedish aswell
but it doesn't say that on my driving liscence or birth certificate

i aint a racist, because i am human just like you, i dont see any difference in people wether they are black, white, yellow, red, blind, bad good because they are human too
we all make up the human race

either way, you just takin the piss out of your own country(whith which, it and you would not exist if it were not for the ENGLISH pilgrim fathers,,,,,go on DENY IT), the founding farthers, and the constitution....your's not mine, so please carry on trying to get me banned...bet ya dont,,,,,,timmy

dang you just got pawned dog

my take on the scottish?....i dont have one

Are you sure? Com'on, tell me how you really feel about the Scottish!

You tend to forget all the other countries that founded America (French, Spanish, Italian, etc.). Some may even argue that the Vikings were the first to discover America, but hey, I watch the History Channel from time to time.

Nevertheless, I'll humor you and your arrogant, narrow mind. "Why yes, you are so right! The English was the ONLY nation that started America. In fact, they transplanted Indians from who knows where just to have an excuse to kill what they considered savages! Oh yes, it's ALL about England!"

I hate to break up a good argument, but getting back to the subject: The article says, "Blu-ray Discs are up 506% year to date and have a 1.2% share in the total market."

So, 506% sounds like an enormous increase (and it is), but when you consider that it's an increase over practically nothing, it still doesn't amount to much (1.2% of the total disc market). High def is catching on, but it will be a while before it seriously competes with standard DVDs. Meanwhile, those of us with high-def players can enjoy our early advantage.

well john

thats what i was saying from the very beggining, lets see if timmy insults you aswell.

didnt sony themselves say that blu isnt gonna compete against sd, just go out and buy it if you want true hi-def and as you can see, in the uk that is 5 fold over the last count.

so i cannot understand poster and timmys attitude, weirdos

anyway bye bye

ahhh good old george, packed his homo ass up, so he could live in the homosexual capital of the world, the good old U S of A

with so much homosexuality around him in AMERICA, it was'nt long before he got caught commiting LEWD CONDUCT with one of america's 10s of thousands of homeless war veterans, and tramps
so yes it is kinda sad that george is gay and lives in america with his gay american partner, as he does not contribute to 506% increase in blu-ray sales in the uk

i tried to find a photo of michael jackson without any KIDS or monkeys on his bed, but alas they simply dont exist

"The month after Toshiba pulled the plug on HD DVD, Blu-ray sales plummeted by 40%. A Harris Poll that was released in may showed not only that more people own a Playstation 3 game console than a standalone Blu-ray player, but that more own an HD DVD player than a BD player.

Forecasts haven't been any more sanguine. The same poll showed that just 9% of non Blu-ray owners said they were likely to buy a BD player within the next year, even though they knew it was now the only HD-disc game in town"

No let me explain it to you in idiot. If I go to BB to Buy Live Free or Die Hard. I have a choice between the bluray and the DVD. There for they are both in competition. By having different qualities. Just like Xm and Serious (until they merge) One has Howard Stern and the other has the much better Opie and Anthony. They are not the same but never the less compete with each other. Or you could say that Coke and Walmart brand soda compete, but the store brand doesn't taste good but that doesn't mean that it isn't a competitor.

no you arsehole

when dvd's offer what blu does

then they will be in competition

dvd player.....$40
blu.....$500

are you mentaly inbalanced?

i knew blu was in competition with hd-dvd(since they offered more or less the same product)

but not sd-dvd,,you know blu is HI DEF, dvd's are not

get a grip, ya losing it

NO, They are in Competition still. They are the only two formats available for purchase or rent. Blu-Ray is currently trying to gain market share to compete with DVD. Yes, they are two different pictures, and two different sound dynamics, but at the End of the day you do have the choice to select a DVD or a Blu-Ray disc. Therefore there is a competition of which one do you choose! Blu-Ray is trying to dominate the market as the new technology of choice. Last time I checked at the rental store, I chose to rent a DVD over the Blu-Ray version. Reason why, I do not have a Blu-Ray machine at the Cabin. That was a choice. If I was worried about my picture quality on my 8 year old 27" JVC and my $80 Pansonic DVD player, I would have packed up the Blu-Ray HTPC, and might as well packed up the 22"LCD monitor as well, just for HD. In my mind they are incompetition. You gotta remember that DVD currently has over 3 Billion players out there. So, Blu-Ray has a little catching up to do...

Considering the age of DVD and Blu-Ray, isn't that a little like asking why a three year old can't type a coherent sentence when a 13 year old can?

didnt even come into the equation

blu-rays catalouge is tiny compared to dvd

when was the last time you saw mike tyson fight sugar ray leonard

never
they were both boxers, but not in competition with each other

It is competition. Age bears no comment. Is it fair to say that if VHS was till around, it would be a market competition against DVD and Blu-Ray? There are some people out there still do not own a DVD player. We all know that VHS is not available anymore, but if they did it would be a competing format. So the AGE argument is Null and Void. If Blu-Ray is to succeed, (which it probably will) it has to compete against DVD to get penetration. I am correct, am I not?

BTW, You should read

Different markets, though. Most people would be buying DVD's and not VHS for the better quality, longevity and the "new" aspect.

Quote:

You are correct in that. However, the only point I was trying to make was age is a factor if someone expects BD to do DVD type numbers right now, at which time age comes into play. That's it.
