Gosh, critics were kind to this one. First let's right off talk about image quality: it was crap! I've seen DVDs without the aliasing problems, clipped whites AND blacks, and softness that just killed this. There is seriously nothing redeeming about the movie image quality-wise. The sound stunk, with hardly any sub or surround effects at all. You could hear the dialog, but considering the dialog, it wasn't exactly a plus for this movie.
The story is basically a remake of the old 50's theme with the angry plants, but the special effects were not up to par with those of the 50's. (I kid you not.) Perhaps if it didn't take itself seriously and was a parody of those old films, it could have been really funny. But it wasn't.
There isn't a whole lot I can say about this one, except "pass it by". It was honestly painful to watch till the very end, and the only reason I watched it all was to hope every character, non of which I cared about, died a horrible death.
Edit: The only reason I rented this from our local video store was because I thought the preview was pretty cool. Stick with the preview!

tucker_jenkins, now you have to be banned because you have no taste in women. They were "Okay" if you like the bleached blonde with areolas the size of tea saucers. And if you strangely like that kind of thing, that was the only redeeming point of the movie. Unfortunately, that's not my thing.

This tool is really compensating for something. Perhaps his Boyfriend left him? Regardless its not our problem, he should just be banned.

rangoonth, OMG... it's the first time we've agreed on two things at the same time. Perhaps even one?
Seriously, Henning needs to give John or whoever banning powers so that at least a couple people can monitor the site. The owner can't be here 24/7 after all. Time to delegate I'd say.

Sky,
I'd say we are in 50% agreement on this one, which ain't bad. I, too, thought the movie stunk. Not that I mind that almost half of the country's reviewers liked it, though. Differences of opinion don't bother me. My good friend Eddie even mentioned my name in his review of "The Ruins," saying that while he usually agrees with me, he couldn't agree on this one. He rather liked "The Ruins." Fair enough.
On the other hand, I didn't find the picture quality or the sound quality as bad as you indicate. I found the video rather glossy and overbright in outdoor shots, with faces a bit soft, and it did not admit as much detail in darker scenes as I'd liked. But as for the other things you say about the video quality: Didn't notice it. But, then, weren't you the guy who tried to convince me that "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" had excessive edge enhancement, something neither I nor any reviewer I know could find?
As for the audio, it's pretty good on "The Ruins," but pretty subtle as well. The surrounds are alive with jungle sounds when the characters get to the jungle, the dynamics are strong, and the bass is deep and taut, even if none of these things are used too often. They aren't needed most of the time--just when they support the plot (lousy as it was).
As I say, 50-50. I'm happy we agree on the value of the film itself. How DID 45% of the country's reviewers find it good? Ugh.
