While speaking with iF Magazine, 'The Dark Knight' director Christopher Nolan mentioned that the inevitable of Blu-ray will feature the IMAX shifted aspect ratio. He commented, "The Blu-ray, in particular, will be able to actually use the shifted aspect ratios as it appears on the IMAX screen because the 16:9 aspect ratio is sufficiently different from the 2:4 that you'll actually see a shift on the Blu-ray."

He continued, "The resolution on the Blu-ray is clear enough that you can actually see difference in grain structure and sharpness. So I think it will be quite spectacular."

The film has still not hit theaters, so the Blu-ray is far off, but its interesting to learn that the high definition format is exciting directors.

OK, I'm apparently too dense to understand what that means. I know the movie will be projected in a 2.40:1 ratio in ordinary theaters and 1.44:1 in IMAX theaters. So what's this got to do with the eventual BD version, and what are "shifted aspect ratios"?

Will the IMAX version and the BD release contain varying aspect ratios or just one of the above? If it's all in 1.44:1, it won't fill a widescreen TV (1.78:1). They'll have to crop the top and/or bottom for that. So, as I say, what does he mean?

John,

Basically Nolan shot 4 specific scenes in IMAX film... those four scenes will remain in the IMAX Aspect Ratio during viewing at an IMAX... but the rest of the movie will run in 2.40:1. So when said IMAX scenes are shown, the ratio will jump from 2.40:1 to 2:4...

Did you mean the ratio will jusmp from 2.40:1 to 1.44:1? (I don't know what a 2:4 ratio is.)

So in IMAX theaters, the screen ratio will change during the movie. Therefore, what primary ratio will the BD disc be in? Will it, too, be in mainly 2.40:1, with four scenes suddenly changing ratios to 1.44:1?

John.
Yeah... basically it'll jump from IMAX ratio to the films regular ratio on both the IMAX and Blu-Ray. I honestly hope it's just an option though.

I'm in Moses Lake, but i'm going to Spokane with my girlfriend and my friend. Why do you ask?

No. I'm sure Mr. Nolan had a 2.40:1 camera rolling for those four scenes as well. And if not, i'm sure they will find a way to convert them for the BR. Now..i am not stating this as fact, because truly "I don't know." But common sense prevails here. Doesn't it?
