I got multiple (2) Batman Begins on Blu-Ray today. Both work on my pS3 (after a LOT of loading), and both times they have not worked on my stand alone BD player. All my other BDs work on the stand alone player, btw.

On my stand alone (it's a Sony...not sure what model), the movie loads for a long time and then it starts that-"suburban-life scroll to the WB logo that all WB movies do"-thing. Right as it starts to do that, my player shuts off completely, then turns itself back on and rinse, wash, repeat. It's the strangest thing. I've never seen any player turn itself off and back on like that before.

Now, the back of the Batman Begins box says that I might need a firmware update, but that's just for the In-Movie Experience thing. I should still be able to watch the film normal style with no update.

Any ideas guys? I'd hate to return this a second time (already) and get a third and have the same results.

One last thing: Even when the film works on my PS3 it loads forever. So there's obviously something going on.

It's unlikely to be a dirty or defective disc if you have two copies and they both behave identically.

The movie loaded and played perfectly in my Panasonic BD30, so I suspect the disc itself is having issues with your player. Certainly, you will want to update the player's firmware, which ought to be easy if Sony allows you to download it to a disc and then stick it in the player (as Panasonic does).

If that doesn't work, Warners are usually pretty good about replacing product, but, as I say, I doubt it's a defective disc since you've got two of them.

Also, if you have a friend with a stand-alone player, you might try the discs in his machine. Or you could take one of the discs to a dealer and ask him to play it for you. Just tell the dealer you want to check out how good the player is because you'd heard this could be a troublesome disc, and you're interested in buying a new and better machine.

Be sure to upgrade the firmware on the both players.

The disc loaded relatively fast on my PS3 and played without problems.

Yes same here, my copy booted up in no time on the ps3 and played flawlesly. Infact the only downer to this release is crappy vc1 hd-dvd encode, good god warner you could have slapped another 20gig of zeros and ones on that disk.

Goes to show you how much about video compression you DON'T know. Why waste another 20 gigs, to slow down your the release of your movies? IT has been proven that VC-1 is just as good if not better than H.264 in certain applications. Real time encoding is flawless with VC-1. The encoding time can be easily be cut in half with VC-1. The movies are identical in picture and sound, so how are you going to make it better, by wasting more space? If VC-1 is sooo crappy, ABC is using VC-1 to stream its TV Show Lost over the internet in a 2Mb stream, which is at 720p! So why is it crappy again? H.264 could never do this. Not with a bitrate that low... BTW, that crappy VC-1 transfer happens to look great, so why are you bitching?

that transfer looks SHIT compared to the dark knight preview, it looks SHIT compared to i robot, infact my hd-dvd copy of grand prix blows that transfer away, lots of films do

its not bad
just not really up to blu's standard

Randy,

Does the BD player reboot when reaching the beginning of the movie? If so, someone over on the HTF had a similar problem. A firmware update on June 20 (maybe version 3.95?) solved the problem.

I also plugged the disc into my PS3 last week to check out The Dark Knight prologue and some extras. Load time didn't seem abnormally slow.

Jason, trying to help
