Ok guys, I know this has been asked like a gagillion times, but I am close to taking the plunge. Is the PS3 my best bet to buy into the World of Blu? Or should I just wait to buy a stand alone player? I am not a big gamer, but I have heard some of you say that the PS3 is a sure thing. So help a brother out, what should I do?

For the price I'd say get the PS3. It's not only a bluray player, it does video games (in case you ever wanna try something like say Guitar Hero or something basic like Tetris, or maybe even some shooter games, etc.). Plus you can browse the web with it, look at pics, DIVX videos and other file formats. It's a pretty good machine for what it does.

The only reason I could think of to not get a PS3 is if you need the direct analogue audio outputs to hook up to your receiver or amp. There are probably other reasons which I'm sure others here will point out but that's the only biggie I can think of right now.

Also, if you can wait, Sony is going to stop making the 40GB PS3's (currently $399) and they will increase the hard drive to 80GB in the near future for the same price. Not sure when though.

A few questions:

1. What is your budget?
2. Does your amp support HDMI 1.3A?
3. Does your amp have 5.1 Analog inputs?

No, stay away from PS3 for stand alone. Get the LG BH200, it rates #1 on Consumer Reports. However, it is a discontinued model but that just means you might find one cheap. If not that then pick up the Panasonic Brooo-ray player.

Thanks guys I really appreciate it. My receiver is a Yamaha, and it is 3 years old so I am sure I have the analog outputs. HDMI 1.3, I am not sure. Like I said in another thread, and I already cleared this with the boss(My wife LOL)when TDK comes out on DVD, I am most defenitly taking the plunge.

It should happen this September. Industry sources also says that the new 80GB core model will be the only PS3 possible to buy after that.

I do not think you have HDMI 1.3A. Do you have a model number? This means if you want HD audio using your current amp you cannot get it on the PS3. It does not have the analog output required. The Panasonic DMP-B30 is a very good suggestion. You can read our review here. Depending on your budget the upcoming Pioneer players also looks nice.

if you don't want to upgrade your reciever, buy a sa with analog outputs. but imo, and other fine reputable sources..the ps3 is the way to go at this point in time. it is worth a reciever upgrade.

oh yeah..your reciever is NOT 1.3 compliant.

i am also hearing sept. for the 399.99 80g price drop.

The PS3 still is THE best bet out there right now and you don't have to sell your first-born in order to get one.

The only downside I can see for a potential buyer is the extra remote (Bluetooth). This was not a deal breaker for me, because I went out and bought the Nyko PS3 Blu-Wave IR remote and programmed my Logitech Harmony 880, thus eliminating the need for the Bluetooth remote.

Got that?
