it's interesting that someone mentioned this movie with "the dark knight" just appearing in theatres. i agree with chris that the death of a major member of the cast helped the bottom line.

public awareness of brandon lee was low despite his father's stature. when brandon lee died in an accident during the production, there was a (slightly morbid) fascination with seeing if he would've become a major star like bruce lee. "the crow" wound up in first place at the box office during its opening weekend.

likewise, knowing that "the dark knight" was heath ledger's last completed movie heightened viewer interest. my gf has zero interest in comic-book superhero movies, but even she wanted to see "the dark knight".

(unfortunately, raul julia's death didn't help "street fighter" at the box office.)

I'm sure that the deaths of Brandon Lee and Heath Ledger does create some sort of morbid curiosity to boost attendance in their last films, but I don't think it's as much as you think. With "The Crow," we have the son of Bruce Lee who was breaking out into his career on his own. With "The Dark Knight," we have a stellar cast and one of the best movies of the year.

While most women aren't into comic books, plenty of them are into Christian Bale and Heath Ledger. Nothing against Rauel Julia or anything, but he wasn't exactly a leading man and honestly, "Street Fighter" was terrible. Both "The Crow" and "The Dark Knight" are excellent films on the other hand, and it's that fact that is the driving force behind their success.

hoodaguy,

your reasoning implies that good movies make money and that bad ones don't. unfortunately, there is no direct correlation between quality and box-office gross. plenty of terrible movies have raked in the dollars, and plenty of great movies were flops.

heath ledger's performance is being judged in the context of his death (i.e. people are writing about it as a summation of his career rather than simply one of his highlights had he lived to 80/90/100-years-old).

I know that some bad movies still make a lot of money, but in the case of "Street Fighter," it looked terrible just from the trailers and word traveled fast, not to mention it was a film based on a videogame.

Ledger is being put on a higher pedestal because of his death, but even before he died they were saying he gave a marvelous performance. When you factor that in with a great cast, great story, and great movie all around, the film is going to do well no matter what. Nobody died from Spider-Man to boost that film's attendance, and Batman is just as or even more popular than Spidey.

hoodaguy,

again, you're putting too much emphasis on correlations between quality and box-office gross.

let's take all that you wrote about "the dark knight" and apply it to a similarly-described movie, "quiz show". great cast, great story, great direction, great cinematography, great editing, great everything. it was one of the biggest bombs of 1994 and was buried at the oscars by "forrest gump".

great filmmaking is no guarantee of profitability.

I just thought it was interesting that after reading everyone's replies to my initial post, it went from me asking if anyone knows if The Crow will be released on Blu Ray to people discussing why TDK is making so much money...hmmmm.
So back to my original question, has anyone heard or read anything about The Crow being released on Blu Ray ever?

I haven't heard anything, but if there's a big anniversary of the movie coming up. 10th or 15th, they'll probably release it then I would imagine.
