So here's a question for movie collectors, and the answer speaks to consumer confidence in Blu-rays. Those of you who are building a Blu-ray collection: when you add a title that you already own on DVD, are you REPLACING that DVD and getting rid of it, or are you hedging your bets and basically building two collections, one DVD and another Blu-ray?

Me? I'm hedging, thinking that Blu-ray will probably be the wave of the future, but still wanting to make sure that I still have my movie favorites in both formats, just in case.

What are other collectors doing?

Formats come and go, and nothing is forever. When HD DVD died, I immediately bought another HD DVD player, figuring between the two HD DVD players, they'd last me a pretty long time. I'd do the same if (and when) Blu-ray were replaced by something else. I'd buy another BD player at that time, which would last me until yet a new format came along after the one that replaced Blu. Who knows. I don't have the space for two separate collections.

Blu-rays will start replacing my SD DVD editions when they have the same features, because it would take space to have two editions of the same there is just no reason to keep both, since it looks like blu-ray will be replacing SD DVD, and if you purchased a blu-ray player more than likely you will not be downgrading at all...not that it will be happening for me, since I still have to buy that PS3 (bought a 42" TV instead, and my BB credit card doesn't have that much credit )...

Well yes, for a few years now I have been selling (or trading) off some of my older (or no longer wanted) DVDs. However, many of them I'm keeping for a variety of reasons, such as unique content/versions only available on the DVD (and/or unique bonus features), collectible booklet/packaging, and that I just still want to have certain movies (and concerts) in both formats.

Same thing with my LaserDiscs, as there exists many titles on LD that have exclusive content/versions that are not on DVD, such as the longer versions of John Wayne's The Alamo, the very long, road-show version of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, and the 1990s colorized remastered version of the original (1933) King Kong. Of course, LDs only have analog video, and none are anamorphic, so obviously I don't watch my LDs as much as before (with the exception of concert and music video LDs).

Whenever I get a movie on HD DVD or Bluray that I already have on DVD, I get rid of the DVD version except for the Batman Begins DVD which has the comic book inside (collectors edition?).

Having said that, I'm not replacing every single DVD with a hidef version because it's just not necessary in my opinion for some movies. Only some of them.

I'm guilty of double buying. I will not buy the blu-Ray versions for quite some time on some titles.

I'm trying as much as possible to not double buy at this point. Hell I haven't bought certain DVD's yet just because I know that I WANT THEM ON BLU-RAY! Like Sweeney Todd... I've held off on that until it comes stateside... however I may just break down and buy the steelbook version from the UK.

The only film I'm really interested in double dipping on right now is Batman Begins... and maybe a few others.

I'm only replacing my absolute favorites these days, and thats if they get high marks in the audio/visual department. I have around 40 HD DVDs which I play on my 360 add on, and won't be getting rid of. So I won't be selling those and buying them on blu.

Some examples of the movies I have rebought would be The Bourne trilogy (relaced the first two, but bought Ultimatum on HD DVD for the first time) and Casino.

I've gotten to the point in which I have enough eye candy that I don't feel the need anymore. Enough quality titles are out these days you don't need to buy something you wouldn't normally because you wanted some killer visuals.

Hey Mike37...

Paramount has a current release date of Oct 21, 2008 for the domestic Blu-ray Special Edition of the recent Sweeney Todd film (directed by Tim Burton). So, it'll be here soon (within 3 months).

I am buying mostly BD from here on out, but I'm not really planning to replace any of my DVDs. I might, if the price is right and PQ reviews are phenomenal, but otherwise I am just going to double up on my must-haves i.e. Batman Begins.
