View profile »Early Sept price reduction on X360 hardware:
* Arcade (no hard drive) to $199
* Pro (60GB) to $299
* Elite (120GB) to $399
If this IS TRUE... we can expect the Sony to follow suit. But how low will they go down, given that they're ALREADY LOSING $$$ for each PS3 sold?
To be continued...

Why must people continue posting things that are not true. SONY has not lost money on the PS3 since the end of December of last year.

View profile »Before my xbox 360, I bought the PS3 (that's now returned). I wasn't THAT excited for one main reason: Online gameplay experience NOT AS GOOD as the xbox 360. It's true what they say about getting what you paid for. Example: The amount of "Burnout Paradise" drivers, at a given session, is scarce on the Playstation Network, compared to the xbox live community.

It is correct that Sony broke-even in last financial quarter. However, they now have to earn back the estimated $3.3 billion that they have lost until now. So, if they can avoid a price cut, they will.
Another note is that in the Forbes Article it is indicated that the price cut of the PS3 was not because of XBOX 360 but because of Blu-ray.
So, with "okay" current sales numbers and Blu-ray secured I find a PS3 price cut in 2008 unlikely.

View profile »Sorry to burst your bubble, Henning... but time & time again, history has recorded that if one console lowers their retail price, the other format will also react. That's just the nature of the business, even if a sony exec himself, states that the PS3 will not have a price reduction this year. Nothing is etched in stone. If this xbox 360 september price cut rumor is actually true, EXPECT a PS3 price cut during this Holiday Season.
Sony can't afford just to sit idle by and let Microsoft gain more 'gamers' for the rest of 2008. Even their hidef platter supremacy (blu-ray) won't save them from this Microsoft coup. Consumers will always side on cheaper stuff, and a $199 console IS A MAGIC NUMBER for many.
Production costs & ego will take a back seat since Sony's MGS4 marketing machine, has since fizzled (it did make money for the PS3). Pair the xbox 360 price reduction(s), with their upcoming bloodfest Gears of War 2, and you got yourself a xbox360-mania for 2008! If sony doesn't lower their PS3's this year, what do you expect them to match xbox 360's price-cuts... a feature called a "blu-ray player in every PS3" banner? Not to mention the absence of these PS3 guns, until 2009: Killzone 2, Final Fantasy XIII, & Gran Turismo (for the PS3, built from scratch)... your only EXCLUSIVE PS3 game this year is Little Big Planet, and that won't be enough. Not even Insomniac's Resistance 2 for the ps3 will do the job.

However, as I understand they have announced a new 80GB version that will launch this September at $399. It is likely that Sony will promote this as a price cut since you get more storage but it will be the only PS3 model after September and I find it unlikely that they will reduce price and add storage in one go.
It is important to know that Sony sees the PS3 as a long lasting machine (up to 10 years). This means that they feel that they don't need to win the console war right away and will most likely sit this one out until they get hardware manufacturing cost even lower.
As said before, the reason they lowered the price to $399 was because of Blu-ray. That war had to be won sooner rather than later because Toshiba went on the offensive with $99 HD DVD players.
