“It doesn’t make sense,” said Jorge McManus, a representative for Sony Corporation of America. “We beat HD-DVD like, five months ago. Why aren’t people lining up to give us money?”

TTRI CEO Tom Granville was surprised by the results as well. “We were shocked that this many people are even aware of Blu-ray at all,” he said. “We were expecting maybe half a percent, tops.”

The depth of the ignorance of and apathy toward Blu-ray demonstrated in the survey results was impressive. When asked whether they knew the difference between Blu-ray Profile 1.0, Profile 1.1, and Profile 2.0, thirty-seven percent of survey respondents stared slack-jawed at the interviewer, forty-one percent uncomfortably changed the subject, and twenty-one percent slapped the interviewer for “talking dirty to me.”

Obviously satirical article but still made me laugh milk out my nose

actually, lack of knowledge isn't surprising given just how confusing the profiles can be. i keep abreast of certain developments in home-theatre technology, but i still have to look up the differences between the profiles to know what's happening.

Funny, but true. When I was polling people for the the big survey, there was hardly any interest in Blu-Ray or HD DVD. The obvious isn't so obvious for a lot of consumers though. Then you follow what eddie says about the profiles, and people just get confused then, really don't give a shit at that point. Except for you die hard junkies at this site. I think there still sits that narrow mindness about big corp america, thinking that everyone will scoop up the latest gadget. Hey it took Apples IPOD almost four years, before people knew what an IPOD was. Now look at it sales. It will take some time. DVD was an instant sucess, because people were comparing it to VHS, and the tape limitations.

Now, for Sony to be so bold an arrogant to expect people to line up for Blu-Ray, considering it's five months after a format war, all the confusion of format profiles, the prices of the hardware still overpriced (I'm looking at standalones, you PS3 humpers) , and the prices of movies (in store for general consumers, most people do not shop at amazon guys) being at $25 to $40, Sony better get off their asses and promote, and advertise if they want to sell Blu-Ray.

HDTV's are just becoming wide spread and they have been on the market for years. My cousin who lives in North Carolina was up for is son's graduation a couple months ago stopped by my house. At the time I was watching Jet Li's Kiss of the Dragon on Blu-ray. He came in the basement and started watching with me, even though he said the picture was very nice he did'nt really care about Blu-ray. So yesterday he called me and said, "What's this thing about Bluetooth that you can watch on TV". I immediatly start laughing then I told him that it's called Blu-ray and he was watching it at my house. He would've been the last person that I would expect to ask about anything HD.

For SONY to think that people are going to rush out and buy BD now that the war is over is stupid. It will at least take 2 more yrs. before the consumer is fully aware of it's existance.

Lower prices and advertise, that's the solution.

Maybe $100 blu-ray players and $20 movies...

Question. "Can Blu-ray continue to sustain losses for another two years?"

Answer: Blu ray will continue to make their product for years to come waiting for the consumer to finally realize and buy it.
Question: How long will retail stores give blu ray valuable shelf space if it is not selling?

That would be a valid question if it were based on reality. However, everyone seems to be making money from Blu-ray. And the industry is on track to selling at least $800 million of those $1.50 disks by the end of this calendar year (just in the USA). So even if you're not buying them, obviously someone is, and in increasing volumes. Retailers and rental stores continue to expand their selection and space allotted to Blu-ray, so I doubt they're "wasting valuable retail space" simply because they enjoy losing money.

800 million! WOW! (peanuts)

-and what is dvd doing in this timeframe?

skyhawk,
are you really trying to suggest that blu-ray is covering its production costs? (at THIS point in time, i'm not talking about 1-2 years from now)

Skyhawk he has a point. At this time I think the Blu-Ray camp is far from recovering costs, unless the production price is close to what DVD is. It is however possible but highly unlikely. Other than my friend there in the Philippenes, I will check the validity of Blu-Ray movies only costing $2 US. 800 million was lost in one day, the day Toshiba closed the HD DVD camp. So in theory 800 million is really small gains so far.
