Exactly, the same with SD DVD and blu-ray...

If in 5-years prices are still the same for Brooo-ray disc's, then we'll have something to bitch about. As for now, it is literally like it was during the beginnings of DVD. Prices then were close to $30 then and Disney charged double that! Complain all you want now, but if you look at history you'll see bitching about it is pointless.

That's funny, because when I bought dvds(about a year after coming out) they cost no more than 20 bucks. McV, your point doesn't make since. Your saying that dvds had no competition and thats why blu Ray is more expensive. No one really needs Blu Ray with SD DVD still around so it should be cheaper.

I upgraded my htpc with a HD-DVD/BLU RAY sata drive. Once I got that... I had no reason to keep the PS3. I can't play console games, if my life depended on it, so I sold it at a $50 loss on craigslist. The best thing out of this whole swap: The sata upgrade only cost me $125 at stootsi.com. It plays both HIDEF formats, plays dvd movies, records dvd movies, and plays my decrypted (with the help of anydvd) hidef movies on none-hdcp monitors.

Oh yeah, it's a FULL-BLOWN computer too. Total HTPC cost: $500. Until blu-ray players retail for around $150 & under (not to mention blu-ray movies for UNDER $20 RETAIL)... I can't justify buying a $400 hidef player, & replacing my DVD collection for about $700 (a little over 50 DVD titles).

Perhaps one of them, but not the dumbest, that would be Toshiba.

I wouldn't say Toshiba is the dumbest. Unless you believe all the biased articles that say Toshiba is planning on battling Blu-ray with super upconversion. Toshiba is obviously focusing on their cash cow called "DVD." If you don't know you can give Toshiba most of the credit for DVD.

Come to think of it you can't credit sony for inventing anything. Most of their claimed properties were made/owned by other companies.

Some of their invented elsewhere woes:

Walk Man- surely not Sony as recent court results show.

Video disk Magnavox

CD- Mainly Phillips

DVD codecs and compression: C Cube, Dolby, Analog etc..

Patents to produce Blue Diodes- More American stuff- Columbia University and co.

Cell: IBM did not sell them the PPC architecture, PPC is the core of Cell. Toshiba has a large share in cell too.

No, the GREED 'N STUPID TROPHY goes to Sony. Congratulations to their memorable "proprietary downfalls:
- the betamax
- the mini disc
- the mp3 'bean' player
- their own online mp3 portal / store
- the memory stick flash card (twice the cost at QUADRUPLE the physical size, compared to a microSD - with the same comparable data size)... the worse part = no other brand but sony uses the junk.
- last but not least: The final days of the Sony PSP- COMPLETELY HACKED & Sony has no answer nor firmware fix for it (two firmware versions has since been announced & both were USELESS against the hack). Sure the Nintendo DS is also compromised, but -unlike the DS with a NECESSARY hack adapter that costs over $50- it doesn't cost a player a SINGLE PENNY to modify the OS of the PSP.

I didn't buy a player until 2-years after SD DVDs inception. Back then, the average cost of a DVD movie was $25 -- yes, there were a few cheap ones but they were always movies you'd never have your best friends suffer through. Point being, the "good" movies were always closer to $30 and some even more.

Did Toyota invent the car?

Did Dell invent the PC

Did Toshiba invent a well conceived, underadvertised, turd... Yes. HD-DVD.

And how many failures has Sony had?

Betamax
UMD
Mini-disc
memory stick
the list goes on...

I'm sure all you will come up with is some nonsensical bashing of Toshiba/HD-DVD

Your one of those Blu-trolls that came about after Toshiba threw in the towl.
