Jim Keyes, CEO of Blockbuster, stated during a conference call with investors that the movie rental giant is now selling 2,000 to 3,000 Blu-ray Disc players a week since erecting Blu-ray themed kiosks at their retail locations. Because of this success, he feels that Blockbuster will soon become an ideal location for the rental and purchase of Blu-ray products.

Keyes commented, "We think we are seeding the Blu-ray population. We are seeing consistent growth, new customer growth, which is probably contributing to our increased [in-store] foot traffic."

I'm confused. Did that article say 2000-3000 BD players per week, or discs?

He said players.
I am not sure if this is stand alone or PS3 sales, and I don't know if they would specify.
BD Players seem to be flying off the shelf in the latest news releases from amazon, walmart, and now blockbuster, but we are still not seeing the numbers increasing in software.
9 million in disc sales this week which makes the average of weekly sales this year of 10 million a week.
Sounds like a lot but with Sony's prediction of 1 billion in sales and the studios hope of at least 750 million in sales, Blu ray needs to hit the 30 million a week numbers if they hope to hit between those numbers until q4 is over.

Oddly, my local BlockBuster seems to have closed down. I don't know why perhaps its an expired lease, whatever. Doesn't matter to me anyway I don't like to rent disks.

On the other hand, a local WalMart has just finished a serious renovation on their TV-DVD section. The new set up looks very Best Buyish with a very visible end cap and an entire section devoted to BD. The prices of the disks, however, are still high, averaging around 25 bucks each. Not like WalMart of bygone days. I did not notice what they are carrying for players.

Steve,

As many have said here before, buy' em on Amazon, or wherever cheap online. It really is the best deal going. All my Brooo-rays I've purchased on Amazon where sold as used items in very good condition for much cheaper -- I've never had a problem with anything I've purchased from Amazon so far.

Tim - Spreadin' the love!

Iv'e bought probably 95pc of my hd disks from Amazon. The rest from deepdiscount.com or secondspin.com. My wife calls me an Amazon addict, which is probably true. Disk orders from Amazon around here come from Nashua NH and sometimes arrive in one day by mail if I place the order early the previous day.

I actually noted a few 15 dollar Blu-Ray discs at Wal-Mart recently. Stargate, Total Recall, and Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

Just thought I'd throw that out.

I just spent the first part of this week in Montana, and I'll tell you I could not find a Blu-Ray disk any cheaper than $17.99! Most of the disks were $24.99 or higher... And the titles that were under $20 were single layer crap from WB.
