BTW...ahem. I got your model number mixed up with the review i read yesterday in THIS months issue of Home Theater.(sorry) But THIS months issue of HT does a very good comparison between the Denon 3800BDCI Panasonic BD50 Samsung P1500. Between these three, the DENON was the only one to score higher marks than the PS3 as far as audio /video.(cost $2000) Once again i am sorry for mixing your player up with the P1500. But still...I have been reading ALOT on the subject, and everybody still says PS3, (price/performance) is the player to beat.

Then of course, in January, HD DVD closed up shop. I had over 100 HD DVD's, and figured I couldn't depend on the XBOX 360 addon alone in the future, and thought I should look into getting another HD DVD player. I ended up getting an A3 for cheap and figured I could use the XBOX 360 as a backup.
Then, back in April, barely 5 months after purchasing it, the Blu-ray drive in my PS3 died. I sent it into Sony and got a refurbished replacement with a 90 day warranty (so much for one year). About this time, i saw lowered prices for the LG and Samsung combo drives. Seeing as I really wasn't playing the PS3 much, I decided to sell the PS3 to a friend and picked up a Samsung BD-UP5000 for $399 at Future Shop (even got them to throw in the FOrbidden Planet HD DVD for nothing!). I liked the fact that it had 7.1 analog outs (my Yamaha receiver doesn't have HDMI, so this is the only way for me to get lossless audio at the moment). I
love the fact that when I want to watch a movie, it doesn't matter if it's Blu, HD DVD or DVD...I just stick it in and it plays. I found that the Sammy played all these media better than any of my previous players. The Sammy vs PS3 was close, but I found the Sammy was sharper and had more vibrant color when calibrated. DVD upconversion was much better than all of them.
Overall, I am completely satisfied with my purchase. All that's left now is for Samsung to deliver DTS-MA through analog in the upcoming firmware update and I'm a happy camper. Profile 2.0 would be icing on the cake.
Edit: I have 71 Blu-rays now to go along with my 117 HD DVDs.

Like I said, the PS3 IS a cool unit, but no IR? Stoopid. Controllers? Stoopid triggers and I feel like I'm gonna crush the damn things.
