Sony starting to lose ground to other BD makers and still faces massive battle with DVD

Quote:

Stripping out PS3 sales and focusing instead on pure BD players/recorders, and other players/recorders, and the data suggests that back in January (when HD-DVD was in its last days) Sony held 66% of sales, and that market share has now shrunk to 33.6% of the BD recorder market in July. Close, with 32.8% of the Japanese market is Sharp, and in third place with 32.1% is Panasonic.

But – and here is the worry – the Japanese are still buying a huge number of “standard” DVD recorders, some 60% of the total market for recording devices. It is fair to say that standard DVD recorders are significantly cheaper than BD devices, and the overall market in terms of value has grown by 30% compared to a year ago, but this itself is hardly meteoric.

This goes back to my point I made yesterday. Sony needs to reshape it Blu-Ray business to make strides this year to be number 1 again. Wow, I actually gave Sony advice, without bashing them...

It's OK, Tony. You've always had that SONY appeal to you, so it kind of evens out.

Sorry Tony - My first post was to correct some poor reporting of the ABI report.

My second post was to highlight that other manufacturers are starting to take back some market share from Sony - whats wrong with that?

I could have posted Blockbuster were pinning there hopes on Blu-ray after their shares take a 10% hit.
Or
Netflix were adding a premium to the Blu-ray rentals but didn't see this as a problem because their Blu-ray rentals were tiny compared to there other business.

How about a link that shows Sony is using a unfair tactics against their BD counterparts

No - I've not done any of that - I don't see what your problem is.

His problem is he's a SONY fanboy and always has been. Well, to him that's not a problem, but to the rest of us . . .

You can't say ANYTHING about SONY that might draw any negativity towards the company, or you'll get the Tony/Skyhawk one-two punch. It's a trend that has gone on for the last year and a half, and it appears it will keep going on as long as people say the smallest bad thing about SONY. Research all the old threads it you have to.

So, Scotsman, keep posting all you want from other articles or say whatever you want about SONY. As I mentioned, what you have to say kind of evens things out. So please, don't let the SONY fanboys get to you.

Tim - PS3 blows dog vomit!

This doesn't seem very surprising. Along with Sony, there's Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp, Denon, Funai, LG, Philips, and others that I'm probably not thinking of right now. How could Sony be expected to keep 66% of the Blu-ray standalone market for an extended period of time? Very impressive if they did keep that hold on the market, but a difficult task with all the competition that's out there now (and only getting stronger).

This is good news capitalism is good! This only shows that competition does indeed exist among Blu-ray hardware OEMs, as opposed to what those "Sony conspiracy" nuts were telling us last year. So far things are progressing the way I originally predicted (yes search the archives). This competition will continue to drive down prices, albeit not at a level where companies do not make a profit of course. But it will also continue to drive R&D to provide cheaper manufacturing as we've already seen happening that will help lower prices while retaining adequate margins for these companies shareholders.

As far as Tim's assertion that I'm some sort of "Sony shill", well do please again check the archives. I admit I'm a HT AVS freak who loves HD, and as such had both formats (DOH!). Since this site only had 3 Blu-ray owners (2 including myself that were actually duel format), it seems defending one of both formats you own put you in the "Sony shill" camp if you dared voice any disagreement over the ridiculous FUD that predominantly colored this forum. Times change.

I have no interests in Sony as a corporation, do not own any SNE stock, nor am I an employee or member of the BOD. They can't even make a great D-SLR camera (but they used to be competitive in the P&S category).

Speaking of stock, looks like I called both the bottom of financial stocks (BAC) and the top of resource stocks rather well. I wont hold BAC much longer, since I only need to double my money. Then I rest in "sin" stocks and cash until I see a direction in certain sectors. This is turning out to be a great year financially. But as I said before - no brainier. God I love capitalism!

Well if we have Sony fanboys then I say let the bashing begin! Think of them trying to make it a felony in the US to fastforward past the commecials on a DVD or BD- yes they tried this. Them trying to block PCs video capture cards with a brodcast flag and being defeated in courts. Them aligned with the RIAA impresonating police officers in the US and breaking in to people's houses because they thought innocent people were pirates. Them damaging people's hardware because they thought this was a good offensive move against possible pirates. Them doing the stupid and politically impossible ICT stunt and thinking they can turn on stuff that through spyware would disable you property or hinder it. Them thinking they could force you to be connected to the internet all the time so they could pull this ICT threat off. Them failing with earlier DRM DVD schemes. Them doing the rootkit and damaging people's computers. Them doing the payola radio scams. Them ripping off Immersion and getting busted. Them ripping of the inventor of Walkman and getting busted- the list and their contempt goes on endlessly. Thats the Sony way folks!
