I contacted Toshiba last week about my firmware update failing on the model HD-A30 HD DVD player. Explained to them that I took all precautions by battery backup and not touching anything whille it was updating. They said today that I can ship it to them and they will send a replacement within 7 days of receiving my old one. I figure it's gonna be a refurb replacement but at least I wont have a brick and it should have the latest firmware. As long as they don't give me a different model I will be happy. I am within my year warranty however.

My machine wouldn't get past the "Welcome" display.

Wolvinator, that's good news. The same identical thing happend to my PS3 in regards to updating the software and I got a refurb in two weeks. Needless to say that I've had no problems since. When something happens like this you get that gut feeling like you're in for a battle, but sometimes it's as simple as picking up a phone. One question though, will they send you a box and pay for the shipping or do you have to do everything?

you might get a brand-new player. over at forums.highdefdigest.com, people have reported that they've been getting new machines for their bricked ones.

Tony, that was the gut feeling I got at first, lol. They said I have to ship out of my pocket but that is the only expense. They gave me the address and directions on what to include. I cannot complain as I'm past the 3 months free labor which is stated in the U.S. warranty.

Posters, I really hope that's true. A newbie one would be great.
