Is there a list on the web that show all dvds that have rereleased in anamorphic for first time?

I have a bunch of dvds that piss me off because they look like garbage on a 16 x 9 tv since they are letterboxed.

In other words I need an up to date list of enhanced for widescreen rereleases.

Here's a tricky wolfie. Put your tv into 4:3 mode, not full, and most tv's will allow you to enjoy those letterboxed features!

If the widescreen transfer is not anamorphic, enhanced for widescreen TVs, then no amount of fiddling with screen formats will help. Blowing the picture up to fit your screen will just accentuate more blur and noise.

One's best bet is to make a list of all the films you want to replace in anamorphic widescreen and then ook them up one at a time either in DVDTOWN's database or at DVD Empire. Both places will tell if there is an anamorphic edition available.

Thanks guys for the info. Yeah, Reaggie, I've done that but like John says it severely hurts the picture quality stretching it like that.

One that I really wanted in enhanced widescreen was Cutthroat Island. I love the movie even though it was trashed by critics. I guess you could call it a guilty pleasure, lol.

BTW John,

I've been enjoying your reviews. They are well thought out even if I don't always agree with em

Thanks, wolfvinator. I hope the time never comes when everybody agrees with me. A world without differences of opinion would be a boring world, indeed.

Also, you could always avoid the non-anamorphic problem with "Cutthroat Island" by buying the pan-and-scan version. Sorry.

I just had to put that always part in, just in case. I cannot think of any of your reviews at the moment that I disagreed with . Some movies I have to see even if they are said to be horrible, lol.

As John (and many of us) has indicated often, there are still several significant titles not available anamorphic-enhanced on DVD (Region 1). Here are a few that come to mind...

-48 Hrs.
-The Abyss
-Annie Hall
-Breakdown
-Days of Thunder
-From Dusk 'til Dawn
-Private Parts
-True Lies
-Good Will Hunting (although I think it might have been remastered recently)

Remember to be sure, the title must say "16x9 widescreen" or the word "anamorphic". Of course Fox has been guilty of mislabeling some of their NON-anamorphic DVD titles as "enhanced for widescreen TVs", when they were not in 16x9, but just "letterboxed".
