As Subject - can Sony handle cheaper BD players.

We all know the PS3 is on a relative high in terms of not losing Sony money. Most of this can probably be attributed to it being the BD player of choice. However while the PS3 is not losing Sony money its not exactly a high margin item for them in terms of hardware either.

Now that profile 2.0 is here - what happens to Sony? Does the price for such players remain high thus keeping the PS3 on the buyers shortlist while at the same time keeping the Blu-ray uptake slow.
Or does the price fall to a point where interest is generated in Blu-ray but at the same time to a point where the PS3 can't compete thus returning it to the expensive mill stone status around Sony's neck?

Which does Sony fear most?

Once again, this Holiday season, and the PS3 pricedrop, will dictate the future of that format. IMO, they should release a $150 player, drop the price of software to $15-20, loose a little money in the short run, make it up in the longrun.. because who wouldnt buy this at that those prices?SD DVD dies, Blu-ray is the NEW DVD.

Obviously the PS3 couldn't get anywhere near the $150 mark. So you think Sony should forsake the PS3 in favour of BD sales/success?
Maybe just treat the PS3 as a 'proof of concept' type experience? A bit like the bugatti Veyron - makes no economic sense - they just wanted to show it could be done?

If you asked - I think they'd say they already are - that includes all Blu-ray player makers.

Yes they are. But they have not tried those silly price points i just threw out there. If they are going to hedge all of their bets on the PS3, which i think they will, then THIS holiday season is critical. Don't ya think? But IMO, they should focus the PS3 back towards what it was made for (gaming i think?) and throw out "THE TROJAN HORSE" plan. Sony i believe flirted with this same thing a bit with the PS2, pushing the DVD aspect, but they came back to their senses, and look how that turned out. If they throw a $150 BR player out there, i'm pretty sure it would be REALLY successful. And it would even pay for the PS3 failure, if that were to happen.

The biggest problem is the PS3 is it's not Scottish, therefore it is crap!

Man this is really getting boring... the griping about the cost of a $399 Sony Playstation 3.

I would assume that most here can afford a home, car, clothes, shoes, groceries, HDTV, Home Theater System, wife/girlfriend/boyfriend... yet love to complain that the PS3 is just "too expensive" at $399, but they would definitely be interested in some $150 Blu-ray player - right now.

WIMPS! Companies have to make money, and the USA dollar is not great these days. $399 is definitely CHEAP for everything the PS3 can do. Oh well, keep complaining... we'll read it, but I certainly don't agree or sympathize with the whining.

Hendrix,
When it comes to the general population, yaknow, blah blah blah...$150 bucks is a great price point IMO. I own a 60 g PS3, and i love it blah blah blah...but once again we are, only bullsh*tting on here...trying to kinda figure out amongst ourselves if you will, how this format can succeed and prosper. And Imo, $400 bucks IS rather steep for someone that is perfectly happy with DVD, struggling to make ends meat, and doesn't really see the difference. AND...$30 bucks for a flick, that you can find in the bargain bin for $5 ? WELLLLLLL.....uhm.....YEAH.

EDIT-
So, what you are saying is that you would not sacrifice the PS3 (which is infact a game console), to get more "cheap" Blu ray players into peoples homes? Remember what you said about the dollar now...it is weak right...the middle class is being snuffed out right...the economy is on the verge of collapse right...??? Suddenly $400 bucks seems like alot more than it use too.

No offense Joe, $399 is a little high for a lot of consumers. Regardeless of the technology. Shit I paid close to $399 for my XA2 a buyers cost when it came out, sorry two months before it was released. Sorry not that close, but $522 US at that time. Those CF's at Sony will only knock the PS3 to $324 for me. That's retarded. The new 350 or 550 that is coming out can be had for an amazing $316, and $465 respectively! Whoop de doo. Toshiba at least realized how important dealers and customer actually were an offered CX's and Dealers discounts! Crap I used to a be a dealer for Mitsubishi Projectors four years ago, and I got a mailer code for $250 off any new HD Projo and haven't done a lick of business in almost two years! I buy at retail cost there, I used to get Wholesalers Cost. Just in case you do not know, There is Buyers Cost, Wholesalers Cost, and Retail cost, then you Retail mark-up... $399 is not cheap, especially for the 80Gig unit that is not backwards compatible with PS2 games! There is not discounts on the 40 Gig unit...
