People are saying BD needs to lower costs to help the uptake of Blu-ray. Others quite rightly point out this is a new technology and prices are about right. Well it looks like PC makers fall into the first group while OEM drive makers fall into the second.

PC manufacturers including Acer, Dell and Hewlett-Packard are shopping around for better deals on Blu-ray Disc (BD) Combo and BD-ROM drives. The leading ODM/OEM makers are defiant however, claiming that they are unable to keep component costs down, and so are refusing to lower the quotes for the PC vendors.

DigiTimes cites a source for the figures and notes that none of the OEM manufacturers are willing to sacrifice profitability for orders.

this is yet another area where sony can screw over its partners/competitors. sony makes consumer electronics, videogame consoles, computers, and movies. it can undercut everyone else just because a "loss" in one division is a profit in another.
how much do you think samsung is eating it for releasing their piece of crap dingbat blu-ray players?

The depths some people are willing to trudge, if this site were a barrell, then surely this thread is scraping the bottom of it.

Sony = Walmart
The two share the same cut throat ideals.
American business at it finest! Walmart abuses the Chinese, Sony abuses the Koreans(Samsung). It's all about pressure cooking your competition!

Helped of course by millions of american avg joe's (some ignorant to the facts, but many who know full well how these bargain shops can afford to sell their bargins) on a daily basis. Why dont you go to LA and go buy all your clothes from gucci?, if it bothers you so much.

You sir are an idiot. Walmart deliberately abuses chinese companies to produce for them a cut throat prices. The average American ignorant bear does not know the difference. Walmart was put out over five years ago, to stop abusing American made goods. Does anybody remember why RCA went under? Walmart wanted so much control of what RCA did. RCA wanting to be in the largest chain of stores worldwide took huge hits just to stay. Just like Toshiba did with HD DVD. Eventually RCA folded along with larger section of companies like Rubbermaid, almost fell out of existence because of Walmart! Walmart names a price, and if the company can't make the product for that price, Walmart walks! IF you are intersted, I would ask JOE / Love Hendrix to find me the documentary done by PBS, and NBC on DVD so you could buy yourself a copy and soak up Walmart for what they actually are... After RCA folded, it was amazing that all of a sudden the DURABRAND brand was born in every Walmart location across America!

Thee only reason walmart sells is because people buy, simple as that. And please dont go branding me anything, you seem to be doing that a lot to people as of latley. Myself, i dont steep so low and to such childish levels.
Why do you refer to the masses as ignorant bears?, is that how you see people other than yourself?, as dumb fury animals?.
NO SIR, IT IS YOU WHO IS AN IDIOT, WITH A SEEMINGLY HUGE CHIP ON YOUR SHOULDER AND A MAJOR DOSE OF PARANOIA ASWELL( this being proven in your innability to refer to people as people).

Walmart has a pretty good selection of "Made in Canada" BBQs.
Just thought I would throw that out there.

ReaggieP...
I think you may be referring to WALMART: The High Cost of Low Price (from 2005), which I own on DVD ($10 from Best Buy). It's criticism of the company is well done (overall), although you could nitpick a few points here and there.
The overall message of the film (and what ReaggieP pointed out) is true: the company uses strong arm tactics on setting the prices for the products it sells. While they will cooperate more with big name suppliers (Procter & Gamble, Coca-Cola, etc), nothing is sold in their stores without constant price pressure. Some smaller companies just cannot sell to Wal-mart because they would lose money, and some that do sell to W-M barely make any real profits after their costs of labor and transportation are factored in.
I heard recently that Wal-Mart is still the #1 seller of CD albums. I was a little surprised, but I guess it makes sense. However for myself, for a long time now I buy CDs almost exclusively from Amazon (and eBay) due to great prices, selection, no sales tax, and usually free shipping.
And I rarely ever shop at Wal-mart, usually for a relative who wants something specific there, like my uncle, where I recently purchased a car battery for him (at his request), since they had a great price.
