"Watchmen" could find itself in court before it arrives at the multiplex.
Warner Bros. is scheduled to release Zack Snyder's big-screen adaptation of the Alan Moore/Dave Gibbons comics series on March 6, but a federal judge in Los Angeles complicated that plan Wednesday when he refused to dismiss a lawsuit filed by 20th Century Fox against Warners over rights to the property.
Judge Gary Allen Fees ruled that Fox has established enough evidence to support its claims that it holds the distribution rights to the film version of the 1980s graphic novel about damaged superheroes.
Asserting what it calls its "long-standing motion picture rights" to "Watchmen," Fox said Monday that it will ask the court to "enjoin the release of the Warner Brothers film and any related 'Watchmen' media that violate our copyright interests in that property."
Warners has high hopes for "Watchmen," a potential franchise film that has a reported $120 million budget. The studio does not want to mess with success -- it released Snyder's previous big-screen effort, "300," in March 2006, and that action movie went on to gross more than $450 million worldwide.
Warners counters that Fox has no rights to the project.

This looks like it could be a good movie or even franchise so hopefully they get it all sorted out soon.

Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons made a satirical representation, of your favorite Marvel/DC characters in the Watchmen. Care to guess who's Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman (ok, that's given), Punisher, & The Vision?

“I saw Watchmen. It’s fucking astounding. The Non-Disclosure Agreement I signed prevents me from saying much, but I can spout the following with complete joygasmic enthusiasm: Snyder and Co. have pulled it off. Remember that feeling of watching Sin City on the big screen and being blown away by what a faithful translation of the source material it was, in terms of both content and visuals? Triple that, and you’ll come close to watching Watchmen. Even Alan Moore might be surprised at how close the movie is to the book. March can’t come soon enough.”
I don't know about you guys but I trust my Uncle Smitty's word.
Not to mention Snyder himself is a huge HUGE fan of the series. Hell he had 5 huge books filled with story boarding and always kept a copy of the Graphic Novel on set that he can use as reference.

However, Moore wound up creating his own versions which worked out for the best as (like xplay was saying) the characters wound up commenting on various comic book archetypes. Silk Spectre became a take-off of the scantily-clad sexy heroines like Black Canary and Phantom Lady.
I can't say anything about the script, but VISUALLY the movie will be an almost perfect translation. Judging by the reel they screened at Comic-Con (http://www.dvdtown.com/news/our-comic-con-2008/5768), Snyder followed the comic to a tee. The attention to detail is just plain crazy, including the replication of New York City.

One other thing about the movie is that it won't contain the Pirate sidestory in the theatrical release. Instead they're releasing it's own animated feature on DVD before the movie comes out.. then after the initial Watchmen DVD Release they will do a Triple Dip with Watchmen and the Pirate Story cut together. Which will run close to 4 and a half hours.
