reaggiep,

"goblet of fire" looks better on my magnavox than on my hd-a35. i was astounded.

sound quality is comparable to my hd-a35.

how come you can get it for so cheap at your wal-mart??? $197 sounds like a clearance price.

It must be on clearance. They have opted to bring in a sylvania blu ray player, at $249 by the looks of it. It appears to be the same machine though... They also have the $ony 350 at $347. What the hell is up with all these rebrands? Futureshop is clearing out the Sharp 20 at $299, and you have an option to buy a second at $99, or something? Are the manifactures pushing the old junk for the new 2.0?

The Magnavox Blu Ray is missing optical audio which is crazy. I wouldn't get it for that reason alone. That is unless the model I saw at Samsclub is different from the one you have looked at.

Wolf, that is the major reason why I'm contemplating it. I'm not sure about now, but optical outputs are cheaper by nature to produce. Most of my equipment are using the coax outputs. DO a test with your reciever off of a DVD player with both connections. Leave your digital input set to auto. You will quickly notice that the reciever will take the coax connection as precedence! I know that they have done countless studies about the two, but, I have always had great luck with coax over optical. Unless you reciever has only one coax input. My understanding is that coax has little or less compression than that of the optical stream. But I'm Skyhawk will correct me on this.

coax and optical send the exact same information. there is no difference in sound quality.

personally, i hated not having the coax on the hd dvd players.

reaggie, if you can get the magnavox for $197, then go for it. the sylvania is the same thing but will cost you $100 more??? pffft.
