Quote:I'm a little scared of customs for her on the way back though. Perhaps they'd just confiscate them at worst if they sent her to secondary inspection? I've gotta check on that

you could always mail them home...

bladerunner, "mailing" or courier is actually more risky than just bringing stuff back deep in your checked-in luggage. Out of 9 packages in the past 6 years, 8 of them have been opened and inspected prior to departure to Canada. I'm serious.

Personal shipments from the Philippines to Canada are targeted more than other originations because Filipinos have this thing about sending "food" items that are restricted. So they check more. We were also called to secondary inspection on our last return for the same reason (Filipinos). Thank goodness they didn't force us to open the suitcases containing the Tanduay rum! Else a lot of my friends here would have been disappointed.

But this isn't some holiday my wife is going on. I wish I could go too, but my work unfortunately makes that difficult. Plus to get me and the kids there would make the expenditure go well over $25k, considering I don't get paid if I don't work + the plane ticket costs.

It's really very sad, because I've been pretty close to the inlaws. My wife's dad was a great man who literally grew up as a kid grown up in the jungle of Mindanao with nothing, and worked so hard he saved up enough to support himself and pay the tuition for school in Manila to become an engineer. Then he went on to build the most prominent bridges and dams in the country.

And the guy didn't turn out to be some rich fart who didn't care about anyone else. His water distribution centers in Manila are free to those that cannot afford it (squatters). He's done more for the people than the stupid UN have done on the "real ground" over the years. And he takes in animals that are sick or whatever - cats and dogs, blind or disabled in some way and favors them for his house pets. (Very un-Filipino). I'm going to miss him, along with so many others. I have to be the man and be the strong one, yet privately I really hurt. But time to hire the lawyers to ensure the properties properly get transferred to my mother-in-laws name before the "vultures" descend, and help her run everything.

Sorry for the off-topic parts, but times are unpredictably tough.

Sky, they are just outside of Manilla. They are coming home here this week. Their work has paid for a samll container for them to bring stuff back. It is being shipped as far as I know through his company. They have been there for about two months. I'm not sure what the limit is for stuff, but I have a partial list of the movies he has picke dup for me thus far. The Fly was the first one he bought, and Terminator 2 and 3 were the others. He was going DVD/Blu-Ray hunting this week to get the rest of my list together. I will know in a couple of days. Street prices were $2 for BR and $1 for DVD.

I know a bunch of people have dismissed it when I've brought it up before, but I just made a killing on Blu Ray this weekend through Columbia House. There was a special online only offer for members who get the promotional e-mails, which had all items (including Blu Rays) at 70% off. I bought my "regular price" item (which I actually never pay reg. price for - I usually get a box set that I want, since they are always reduced by 30% minimum, but still count as regular price. Sometimes I even call later and cancel it, so I don't buy the reg. item at all, but that's another story...), and got about 40 Blu Rays, including pre-orders for as little as $5.99, and as much as... $9.69! That's right - that was the most expensive one. I know it's a lot, but I have pre-ordered everything I want on Blu for the next 3 months in that order, as well as some upgrades. Pre-orders included The Happening, Iron Man, Interview With The Vampire, and The Fall. Each of those were in the $8 range. Even with shipping ($1.99 each) and tax (about $1), you still can't beat that. I couldn't pass up that kind of sale. Other than buying black market in Asia, that's the best you could ever expect to do for new Blu titles.
