It has been announced that Toshiba has declined an offer to sell its HD-DVD patents to a Leading Taiwan-based makers of optical discs.
This surely means Tosh believes there is money to be made in China with CBHD or perhaps Toshiba has other uses for the Technology either way it seems the company is in no hurry to relinquish its HD-DVD intellectual property.

scotsman, most people here like you, but it seems like all you've been posting recently are links to news about hd dvd and toshiba. i don't want to accuse you of anything (yet), but you're veering close to deadmeat and UK TROLL territory.

Poster5 - please don't compare me to those.
It may seem like that but I can't remember when I last posted about HD-DVD. With regards to Toshiba - I did start the XD-E500 thread before it was mentioned anywhere else, and then posted some follow ups within that thread but I don't remember any others. Sure I did post a couple negative Sony threads.
I'll consider future posts before submitting them - although to be fair I did think that Toshiba not selling its HD-DVD patents to be post worthy.

It IS news worthy to me. I'm curious to know why they wouldn't sell the HD DVD patents and recover some of the money lost. Hmmmm they are either waiting for a higher offer or they believe there's a use for the technology still.
Interesting.
Interesting.

Agreed Falcon. Lighten up Eddie.
Toshibas plan not to sell HD DVD is probably a good one. The black market industry would reek havoc on todays current problems with distribution methods. I mean I can already get Blu-Rays for $2 in the philippenes! Studios would be in real trouble if HD DVD was sold to a Taiwanese company! I think the only company that would have use for HD DVD, would be MS. The next gaming console may use HD DVD to be 100% exclusive. Who is going to hack that? Anyways still and interesting decision made by Toshiba.

You can get pirated Blu for $2. You can get pirated anything for $2. Officially licensed Blu Rays in the Phillipines are comparable to the prices here. Pirating DVDs in Asia is huge business - some pirates even have names for their "companies". Anyway, who owns the rights to HD DVD would have no effect on the Asian DVD market, because so many of the discs purchased are pirated anyway. If anyone wants HD DVD, pirates will make it available. Since officially released discs are under $10 now, I can't see that there would be much call outside of Asia for cheap HD DVD.
