I have a Pioneer Elite VSX-80TV receiver and it does not decode Dolby True HD or DTS-MA HD. It also doesn't take the audio off of my HDMI cable so I have to use a optical cable, digital coaxial or 7.1 analog inputs. I was taking to a co-worker and he said there is a huge difference between dolby digital and Dolby True HD and I should get a blu-ray player that has 7.1 analog outputs so I can get Dolby True HD or DTS-MA HD via LPCM. My question is can you get Dolby True HD or DTS-MA HD over an optical cable/digital coaxial cable an if so does it sound as good as the 7.1 analog outputs? Thanks for your input!!!

Optical simply doesn't have the bandwidth to handle any of the lossless formats. uncompressed PCM will be turned into 2.0 PCM, Dolby True HD will be downgraded to regular Dolby digital, and DTS Master HD will have the 1.5 MBPS Core Track extracted. The sound will still be an improvement over SD-DVD's but it won't be as big an improvement as using the analog outputs.

I bought a PS3 yesterday, but after talking to my co-worker he said its better to have a stand alone with lossless audio via the analog inputs than using the PS3 and getting only dolby digital. Is there a blu-ray player out there that has 7.1 analog outputs? The panasonic only has 5.1

The Samsung BD-P2550 sells for $499 and is now out at Best Buy. It has 7.1 analogs.

It's also profile 1.1 so there is no BD Live function but it does have an ethernet port so an update to profile 2.0 (BD Live) could be in the works.

I'm going to return the ps3 but I think I'm going to wait to get the Samung BD-P2550 or the Sony BD-S550 for the 7.1 analog outputs. Does anyone know if there are reviews yet for the Samung BD-P2550?

Why do you need the analog outputs? Does your reciever already decode the new formats? Then you don't have to drop the extra cash! As long as you have HDMI inputs and the new decoders on board your reciever, you do not have to worry...

curious. you should atleast be getting the "core" soundtrack as mentioned above using this method. maybe this is an old case of the hdmi "handshake" issue, but it just doesnt make any sense because you are getting picture...but no sound?

what are you using hdmi for right now? you didnt mention it in your post.
