Can someone explain DivX? I always see players that play DivX but I don't know much about it. Is it more for home movies. I do understand that it is a form of compression. Why would someone want a Divx player?

Divx was born around the same time as DVD. However no one wanted a files transmitted format, fear of copyright infringements. It was the pay per view form of DVD. Divx, had the ability to provide similar resolutions and quality to that of DVD. However being a 4th the size of a the original DVD file. DVD would be around 4gigs, and DIvx would be around 700mb. Divx now has ultimately grown in size(file) now and has always supported Dolby Digital 2.0 and 5.1. Divx for the most part is available from DIVX.com itself and provides upcoming directors and producers a way to digital distribute movies. Most of the Divx that we would see it that of files available from P2P software. Illegal rips of movies available for download from P2P software. Some are one part movies, some come in two parts. Most are PCM 2 channels, and some are rare come as 5.1 DD! Either which way unfortuantly Divx never really reached it's potential on the consumer market place, and found its way more in the underground development of pirated movies. I happen to own over 300 Divx downloads. I no longer download movies. I was a poor Collage student at one time, and downloading movies was easiest for me.

now Divx offers HD as well anyways. Check the Wikipedia blurb. It has everything about divx...

Circuit City was the PRIMARY (financial) backer of DIVX. Then the format died of a REALLY UGLY DEATH. Now Circuit City can barely keep its doors open for business.

Serves them right.

The format is still around, but only as a ghost. Circuit City really tried to have DiVX replace DVD and they totally bombed. Nobody wants pay-per-view DVDs that expire after a while, especially when you could just wait a few weeks and buy previously viewed movies for around the same cost that never expire. It was a stupid idea from the beginning, and that's why Circuit City is going the way of the dodo right now.

The term "DIVX" was first used by Circuit City- they created the term. It was a FAILED FORMAT (and rightfully so).
http://hometheater.about.com/library/weekly/aa062199.htm

The "divx" term that we now know today, came after.
Quote:
The "DivX" brand is distinct from "DIVX" (Digital Video Express), an unrelated attempt by the U.S. retailer Circuit City to develop a DVD rental system requiring special discs and players[1]. The winking emoticon in the early "DivX -)" codec name was a tongue-in-cheek reference to the failed DIVX system[2].

Also: Circuit City's "divx" is not a definition of a codec. It's their brand name for a renting scheme- of dvd movies.

Today DIVX on a player refers to a compression technology just like VC-1, AVC, MPEG2 and others.

Nothing more or less.

Quote:
DivX technology compresses video to a fraction of its original size for efficient storage on your hard drive and easy sharing online.
