I would do that if I weren't so afraid of losing my saves. Though I'd only go 320 gigs.

What an incredible coincidence, I was thinking about doing this very same thing today. I downloaded a few game demos and some trailers from the Playstation store and quickly ran out of space and was thinking about how easy or difficult it would be to trhow a 500Gb hard drive into the system cause the drives are now around $99.
I didn't look into it yet but I was seriously considering it. Glad you found this article cause now I see you need a specific drive to do it, the Samsung M6. Interesting. My only fear is that I have an extended warranty and I think switching the drive would void it. SHAFT.

I don't think it voids your warranty not sure, I'll check for you Falcon. If your PS3 fails just insert the old drive back in before sending it to SONY.

I'm pretty sure that like MS, Sony requires you to remove the HDD anyway when sending it in.
Sony pretty much openly lets you swap HDDs.

I can't believe it would be that simple. My 360 drive took about two weeks, to clone, and rewrite some the file formating sectors just to get a larger drive to work. It litterally took two code writers, and my hack knowledge just to get my larger drive to freaken work. There must be a capatability issue with that specific HDD from samsung. There was a similar issue when I tried to fit a WD HDD in the XBOX. The file partitions were slightly different, and the XBOX was crying for an MS recognized Samsung drive. Even the firmware on the HDD needed to be changed! So that makes sence that they might have to use the same manufacture, but just due to size restrictions? I'm not buying it. Maybe the PS3 is a simple computer, and dropping a new HDD, with no pins, or cloning is possible. But I'd love to see if you guys tried, and it didn't work though.

Rp, thats couse MS doesent want you do swap drives, and sony does. and yes, it is that simple. i figured it out without reading anything, i think its even in the original ps3 paperwork! but maybe i made that up.
back when i sold the ps3, i threw in a 250 drive i had laying around, and got more money for the ps3 than i originally payed.

Kuco you're right, in the manual that comes with the PS3 it tells you how to replace the hard drive.
I wish you could throw any hard drive in there though but oh well.

what do you mean ..you wish any?
any notebook hard drive will do, all you have to be carefull with -I would say- is ...if the drive is over 300gb, the dimensions might be different than stardard notebook hard drive.
in this case, they did it with a 500gb
