I watched the première episode of the new "At the Movies" show this evening. I've been watching this program for past thirty-odd years, since the days of Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel, and now I can understand why both Ebert and his new partner Richard Roeper walked out on the direction the new show is taking.
Far be it from me to criticize other critics, so I'll just comment on the new show's format. The producers (Disney) seem to have replaced a thoughtful, reasoned discussion by two people with a shouting match of competing sound bites among many people. The program now seems more like a typical game show or a reality TV show than the simple, analytical approach Roger and Gene pioneered. Oh, well....

I felt particularly bad for poor Wesley Morris (of the "Boston Globe"), who could hardly get a word in edgewise. Yeah, I prefer reasoned discourse to shouting matches. If I want to watch mixed martial arts, I'll go with the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

John unfortunately in almost everything now, (especially politics) shouting matches have replaced reasoned discussions. The person that can yell the loudest automatically wins their argument, regardless of whether or not it has merit.

Loud, fast sound bites. Verbal pinball.

Ours doesn't air in Detroit until Monday at 12:00 am, so I'll be watching the trainwreck when I get home. From the intro I found on YouTube last night, it doesn't look promising. But it gets a week or two to bring me in. Otherwise, goodbye.
