I've been considering getting Blu-ray for a long time now, but I've always hated that it is "unfinished" or some players need to be profile 2 to play new movies. I knew the ps3 could upgrade which is great and all, but I don't really care for the ps3 all that much nor do I want to pay that much for a blu-ray player (especially since i got my hddvd player for $200. But what about 1.1 Blu-ray players. Is there a way to upgrade them without an ethernet port or BD live support? I heard of a disc. How does that work?

With 1.1 players, you just go to the manufacturer website and download the new firmware and burn it onto a blank disc. When you stick it in the player it should automatically go through the update process.

I personally have the Panasonic that is on sale at Amazon right now (main page) and love it. Great upconversion, great picture and sound, and I've never encountered a Blu-ray yet that I couldn't play.

Sage, I think you have that part wrong. You don't need a profile 2.0 player to watch the movies, you just need 1.0. The 1.1 players allow you to watch the extras or interactive content on the disc and profile 2.0 allows you to get on the web and check out the web features. ALL movies should work on 1.1 if that's your concern.

Sage the Panasonic BD30K is a very nice bluray player and it's currently on sale at amazon for $250!

I've been using the Panasonic BD30 since the day it came out, and it's been great. It's played perfectly every Blu-ray disc from probably every studio currently making BDs. I now use it upstairs in a secondary system and use Panasonic's BD50 in the main room, but there is virtually no difference in quality between the two players (except that the BD50 is Profile 2.0 compliant, meaning it connects to the Internet).

At $250 (because Panasonic is closing them out for their new BD35s and BD55s, which are virtually the same as the BD30s and BD50s except in size, the new ones being a bit smaller), the BD30s are a steal. I believe they originally started out at about $499 (fortunately, I got one cheaper than that, but...). My guess is that Amazon will have the BD50 on sale, too, before too long.
