I remember one time one of my film professors started one of her lectures by showing clips from old movies. The clips, from a variety of countries and eras, clearly inspired contemporary mainstream Hollywood blockbusters. It was funny because I was the TA and sat at the front of the class looking at the freshmen and sophomores, who gasped and were shocked that their favorite movies were not "original" at all.

Well, here's a thread to see how many "pulls" we can think of (but not obvious ones like "Lady Snowblood" ===> "Kill Bill Vol. 1" or direct re-makes).

------------------------------------------------------------

"The Eyes Without a Face" ===> "Face/Off" (facial surgery)

"Samurai III: Duel at Ganryu Island" ===> "The Karate Kid" (catching flies with chopsticks)

"Hidden Fortress" ===> "Star Wars: Episode IV--A New Hope"

"Orpheus" ===> "The Matrix" (touching a mirror with the glass turning into liquid)

"Le Cercle Rouge" ===> "Hard Boiled" (shooting a gun at a small hole in the distance)

"The Deer Hunter" ===> "Bullet in the Head" (self-explanatory)

You'd think by now any Star Wars geek would now the original trilogy was ripped off from old Kurosawa films.

I just like the word "begat" and wanted to repeat it.

kucoloco,

most of the aforementioned movies are pretty good, though it's kind of a long slog to sit through all three "samurai" movies. you can jump to the third one, but you might be confused by the story because you missed out on the first two thirds. (be warned--the quality is terrible even though criterion released the "samurai" movies on dvd. they look like old vhs masters.)

i didn't like either "the deer hunter" (huge gaps in logic) or "bullet in the head" (over the top, even for john woo).

And let's not forget that in his youth Akira Kurosawa was a big fan of Hollywood Westerns, especially, he has said, the movies of John Ford. His Samurai films are essentially reworked Westerns. Then, of course, Hollywood discovered Kurosawa and remade his "Seven Samurai" as "The Magnificent Seven" and Eastwood's crew found "Yojimbo" and made it into "A Fistful of Dollars," and the circle continued. Now, I see that John Fusco is remaking "The Seven Samurai" and setting it in Thailand. I'm getting dizzy from all these goings around.
