Soon after the lights went down, a source tells us, "a man in the audience started yelling, 'Don't touch me!' People looked around and shrugged. Ten minutes later, the voice yells again, 'I said don't touch me!'"

Again, people shrugged off the disturbance. But a few minutes later, says our source, "the guy stands up in the darkness and thwacks the guy behind him with a big festival binder. He hit him so hard everybody could hear it. Everyone freaked out and turned around."

The thwacker? New York Post film critic Lou Lumenick.

The thwackee? Esteemed Chicago Sun-Times film critic Roger Ebert.

After battling thyroid and salivary gland cancer for years, Ebert, 66, can no longer speak.

"Apparently, Roger was just trying to tap Lumenick on the shoulder to signal him that he couldn't see the movie," surmises our source. "He was trying to ask him to move over a bit."

Though Lumenick seemed surprised to see whom he had struck, he offered no apology, according to another source.

I feel bad for the guy cause he probably thought it was someone being annoying in the theatre but he should have turned around first to see whats going on before throwing something too. Then again it was dark in the theatre so who knows how much he could see in there.

Lumenick's reaction is of a complete maniac, irresponsible and idiotic...I mean, you always turn around and see how it is, you never just turn around and start hitting people...

As if it weren't bad enough based on the people involved, but anytime one person assaults/attacks/threatens/otherwise abuses another person for no good reason, they need to be taken out back and whipped.

Couldn't Mrs. Ebert or someone sitting next to Roger have politely asked Mr. Shoot First to move?

No apology, what a f-ing jack ass. If it's a public showing than maybe some sympathy but, it's a screening most likely for crititcs who are there not to heckle but to watch and write a review.

So that means Ebert (a recovering cancer patient) deserves to be attacked for tapping someone on the shoulder?

Did Ebert rape a family member? Kill someone you loved? Steal money from you?

No? (Shocked. Really!)

Then what do you have against the man who in no way deserved to be assaulted? You don't like his reviews?

Jason, perturbed

Go easy on a person who attacked another for no real good reason? Give ME a break...

However, this makes you think, are the seats there not 'stadium type' seating?? Or is the Lou guy some type of tall guy?
