If I could only use component for video could I still use HDMI for just audio(True HD and DTS MA) at the same time? The reason I ask is I have an HD DVD player and I am thinking of getting (one day) a BD and a new receiver. BUT my projector only takes component video.
Or does the HDMI override the component outputs?

No unfortunately most recievers upconvert only, and do not allow the transistion back to component video. Does your new receiver have HDMI? If it does, you can pick up HDMI/DVI to Component/VGA adaptors from eBay for around $100. I had to buy one for a project I was working on. The Customer was in the same situation your are in. Wanted to take advantage of the HDMI multichannel outputs on HD DVD and Blu-Ray, but had a projo that supported VGA/Component only. I picked up this box for $100 and it worked great! I took HDMI from the receiver, then it goes into the box via DVI, which they gave me the adaptor, then the box converts it to VGA then to Component, and PResto to the cables to the Projo. No generation loss, no noise either! Just a great picture, and awesome sound!

Here's a link to one that I purchased

Ok, I'm officially confused. If Ironbull gets a new receiver with HDMI inputs he could hook up the HD DVD and bluray players to the receiver that way and then use the component out (which almost every receiver has now adays) to the projector for the video.

Or am I missing something?

Yes, Falcon. Did you not read his post? He wants to input HDMI to his receiver then take component out to his projo. Most receivers that I know of do not allow this. That is why I'm suggesting he picks up the adaptor. He can enjoy the multichannel audio, and still enjoy movies, in either 720p or 1080i. The adaptor also supports the 1080p 60 and 24. Unfortunatly most Audio receivers will scale to 720p or 1080i. The problem I have upstairs is the Onkyo 605 wants to revert everything to 720p which is REALLY annoying. If I try use the override to 1080i it leaves beammy lines in the picture! That is evem more annoying.

Really? I had no idea that you couldn't do that. Good to know though.

Ironbull, to be honest I don't see why you can't do that. You should be able to set it on the receiver to Component Out instead of HDMI out, especially with the newer receivers but Reaggie says you can't. You know what...I'm bored at work right now so I'm going to check out the manuals for the newer Yamaha receivers and see if you can do it...be back in a bit...

Looks like Reaggie is correct.

You can transcode every possible input except 1080p component (xbox360) to hdmi. You cannot convert hdmi to anything else. This is not a receiver thing, it's an hdmi rule.

It's fair to say that you will have to buy a receiver with HDMI, then buy that box I recommened to get what you want. I've done it and it works.

I believe my ONKYO allows you to do that, I'll check and get back but the kicker is it will downconvert the signal to 720p, now if your projo is native 720p than it works out.

EDIT: I just checked and no, ReaggieP's method maybe your only answere.

I am sorry again guys, what was on my mind didn't get typed in my question and I think you guys thought I was talking about conversions being done on a receiver. Lets forget about the receiver for my question. So here is what I am trying to find out. Can I run an HDMI cable from a Bluray player for audio and run component from the same Bluray player directly to my projector for video at the same time?
Does HDMI use on a bluray player shut off the component output?
Can HDMI and Component output on a Bluray work at the same time?
I am sorry for the confusion, I just had trouble wording my question properly.
Or how about:
Do all outputs on a Bluray player work simultaneously?
