Tim,

Surprisingly we have quite a few gaming companies here in Salt Lake. 10 years ago, we had as many as 14 or 15 gaming companies here. Currently, there are fewer than that, but, we still have quite a few. The only ones I can think of off the top of my head are Sensory Sweep Studios, Saphire, and Avalanche.

Personally, I plan on staying in Salt Lake. I've lived around the world, and around the country, Salt Lake suits me best. Besides, with Cali, comes MUCH higher cost of living, even 2 to 3 bed houses on less than a quarter acre can cost a MILLION+, and the pay versus the cost of living doesn't work out in your favor, from what I've seen. John might have something contrary to say about that, but, that's my view of it. Besides, Cali has those SUPER restrictive smog regs, and for a speed freak that LOVES big engine cars, and going fast, it's a backwards step for me.

When it was rumored Tobey couldn't do SM2, Jake Gyllenhaal's name was thrown around. I could see him doing it.

He kind of played that nerdy paper guy (comic artist) in Zodiac.

Jake Gyllenhaal as Peter Parker
Mandy Moore as Mary Jane

Those two could really improve the quality of the films IMO.

I Really can't see where the spiderman series can go from here.
I Mean, we saw the guy discovering what he is in the 1st one, we saw him dealing with "responsibility" on the second one and we saw him deal with a metaphor of his "other side" in the third one.

I mean, since studios started injecting character work into superhero movies, all they've been comming up with is putting the hero in the cliche dillema of "comming to terms with what he is"

Spidey has it, Hulk has it, X-men has (1 and 3), Bruce has it (batmna begins)

What's gonna happen to Tobey? What is he gonna nag about this time? His shoe size is too big and he has to live with it?

The only recent superhero movies that were succesful were iron man and the dark knight. Mr.Stark never had a doubt on what he really wants to be, and batman went through all the psycho crap allready in the first one.

S_Coaster! Good to see you're still around too!

I agree with you for the most part on the character growth and the whineyness involved in the superhero storys as of late. But, sometimes it's a necessary step to make them easier for the audience to identify with.

Identification can be achieved by presenting circumnstances and raising overall themes.
You can identify with what goes on around the characters through a situation which shares familiar emotional reactions.

The Dark Knight, two hours of insanity, a terrorized city, people called to act upon each other for survival (ferry scene), a guy who promised freedom and ended up a vilain, and a good guy "sacrificing" himself. And the great thing about it, all that was toned down into a believable "gotham". If this was a batman from the 90's with all that flamboyant colours and homo costumes, the movie wouldn't get anywhere in terms of box office or critical success.

I'll say it again, The Dark Knight is the definite POST 9/11 movie (right after TDK comes BOURNE on my list)

Admittedly Luke sounded whiney in Star Wars by not so much in Empire Strikes Back and he became a man in Return of the Jedi! :p

Tobey = Always annoying.

Soory Jason, biting your style for a sec.

S_coaster,

I agree with your period comment, but you can't compare Dark Knight to Tim Burton's, or any of the 90's Batman films, it's apples and oranges. Both the Dark Knight series of films, and the earlier Batman films are appropriate for their time periods. Though, as much as I love Arnold, I think we could have done without his "Mr. Freeze" performance and the "Batman & Robin" film altogether.

I agree, Tim burton's batman, the new ones and what happened in between is a perfect example of what hollywood was thinking at the time.

I mentioned the dark knight because it was the only recent example that came to mind as far as "nailing it".
I Really liked christopher nolan's work way before batman, i loved memento (One of the really few films with a non-linear structure which completely fits the story), insomnia, prestige etc etc.
I really think he is a great director, very visual and very serious about what he is doing.

I don't think the Spiderman universe has the latitude to go darker without loosing it's identity as a spiderman movie.
We are hearing about all this crazy money given here and there for these movies, this is not new from SONY. I won't be surprised if all this is just another part of the marketing campaign (trust me, stars dont want their salaries published... they have tax people raiding their houses!)

^Nice said^

But again, why do people want superheroes to go dark?? It's the legacy of TDK, unfortunately. Anyways, how can you not see more stories when there are hundreds (if not thousands) of stories to draw from the comic books? I mean, some are indeed outdated, but can still make for a good plot, just update it a bit.
