Keep in mind that with this bluray player you can only hear Dolby Digital and regular DTS. Theres no HD audio codec (Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD, DTS HD MA, etc) support. Also no Ethernet port so it's not a profile 2.0 player (web features).

Still if you want to enjoy HD movies for the video this is a great option for $200 at the moment.

Falcon,

With the latest firmware upgrade (v4.20), the S300 "adds Dolby TrueHD Audio decoding functionality." I assume the player is able to decode the TrueHD track internally and send the decoded lossless track out as PCM via HDMI, since the player (and receiver) still shows plain old Dolby Digital when outputting bitstream.

Even better and it makes this unit even more attractive for $199!

yeah, but then when folks try to play PIP streams and other extras only to find that those things are inaccessible, they're going to wonder what's so great about blu-ray.

If it were one of us (those on this message board), yeah, I would tend to agree with you Eddie however, I'm sure there are those out there who don't give a rat's ass about the extra features (profile 1.1) and internet connectivity (profile 2.0). As long as they can enjoy Hi-Def visuals and perhaps Hi-Def audio from their BD player, this would suit their needs.

Just my humble opinion.

geo,

what you wrote probably applies to internet-based extras (BD Live), which are mostly lame anyway. however, extras that require profile 1.1 are encoded on the disc, and even if it's just a passing curiosity to see what PIP looks like, people are going to wonder what's wrong with their profile 1.0 players.

Anyone know if the latest firmware fixes loading times for POTC1 and 2 and/or 1080i deinterlacing issues? I read that it takes 3 minutes to load those java heavy discs:

It's tempting at $199.00, but maybe better to wait until the 2nd gen Funai clones comes out. I hope disc loading times improve further with those units.

Gadgetpig,

I just loaded POTC1 for curiousity's sake and am happy to report that it took about 1 min and 15 seconds to load from the time I inserted the disc into the drawer until the previews started. This is a definite improvement, since I did experience an extremely slow load time prior to recent firmware updates! They weren't kidding about the "3 minute" load times!

Loading times... this is an area where the PS3 just 'smokes' any other BD player, well, at least if you have the first generation models (I've got a 60GB frst gen model). Pirates trilogy, Cars, Ratatouille, FF4 (either one), Live Free or Die Hard... you name it, they all fully load up within 10-20 seconds after inserting. Note: this was after the firmware update from Nov/Dec 2007.

Bu if you don't want a PS3 in your lineup, it's pretty well known (from users and reviewers) that any of the Panasonic models are worth the price! I'd imagine that when I eventually migrate to another BD player someday, it will be a Panasonic model, or maybe an Oppo. Pioneer's are nice, but overpriced. And the budget players made by Funai (sold under a variety of brand names), are value-priced, and do a commendable job in A/V quality (as Eddie said on another thread). The only negative I've read is the pic quality is compromised somewhat if setting the player's output at 1080p/60, but the player offers excellent pic quality if output at 1080p/24, or 1080i/60, so just choose one of these settings and you'll be happy.

Also, I haven't heard of any titles "freezing" up on the Funai-made units yet. Remember, as previously reported, the Funai models use Sony parts and a chipset provided by Panasonic, and both of these brands are the main leaders behind Blu-ray tech.
