So if you're considering getting the $149 Toshiba XDE... (as an HD alternative) DON'T!
Three words: ONE. TRICK. PONY. After playing with it for a week with my DVD collection... it's far on par with my HTPC (ATI AVIVO far superior). So I tested it against my trusty all-around Philips Upconverter: Barely topping it in the Color Category. Everything else shows the same (and sometimes worse). Yes, artifacts, jagged edges, fast-moving-objects ''graininess"- are ALL VERY EVIDENT. Not what I expected for a $149 upconverter. Had it retailed for $49... I may take a second look... but DEFINITELY NOT WORTH THE PRICE TAG.

So what's worth getting? Selling for ONE DAY & ONE DAY ONLY for $169: Sharp BDHP20U Blu-Ray Disc Player http://www.secondact.com/c=bZdCQXLNa5Qzj6LcRB95Hs18q/category/promo
Yes, it's a refurb... which (at many times) works better than a brand new product, since all kinks has been adjusted. Now, I won't say that all refurbs are legit, including Sharp's reliability, but (at least in my experience) I've yet to own a lemon with a refurb sticker on it.

Sounds like you got a defective player, because the owners reviews are overwhelmingly positive for the XDE player if you take the time to read owner reviews in various forums. Of course, yours is the only opinion that matters, right?

well, considering that samsung and sharp blu-ray players have been getting bum raps, i dunno why anyone would consider them.

funai (magnavox, sylvania, insignia) and panasonic blu-ray players are the best. some of sony's models are great, but some of them suck.

Considering that I have an HTPC that UPCONVERTS far superior than any blu ray or xde player, YES... in my opinion: The Toshiba XDE is not worth $149. I've bought it. Tested it. Played multiple movies with it. I base my judgement in my own experience, not from other reviews or forum discussions, as you stated. I even matched it against my 2-year old Philips upconverted that cost me $39, and the XDE only won in the COLOR MANAGEMENT category. That is it. Does my opinion matter? It matters AS MUCH AS YOUR OPINION DOES. So do the math.
What about you, have you even TRIED IT, or just simply read other people's reviews?

I've had the XDE for about a month now. It outputs a better picture than my XA2 does, but unfortunately it won't pillarbox 4:3 discs, so I have to continue to use the XA2 for that. But for any anamorphic material, I'm very happy with it.

the samsungs have a history of getting the fox "red screen of death" or flat out not playing certain titles at all.

Red like the XBOX???

Sadly but true, my brother's XBOX 360 Elite got the RRoD, AGAIN...will they replace it with a new one the third time? Is he getting something else free besides a one month subscription to Live??
