paramount has discovered that the blu-ray edition has some problems. namely, it won't play in some sony blu-ray players. therefore, the studio is sending new pressings with a new SKU number to retailers. if you've already got a copy, then it's the defective version.

no word yet on whether or not the audio flag for DRC was removed or fixed.

It won't play at all or does the video or audio get messed up? Whats the issue with it exactly?

I wonder if the "fixed" versions will make it out for next week? I guess they will.

Ya know, you'd think with this being one of the top five release of the year AND first major 2008 production to hit disc, Paramount would have gone through a complete quality control process.

At least they're getting out ahead of street date...

Jason, disappointed

falcon,

this is a two-disc set. the movie disc has problems in some sony blu-ray players. either the disc freezes in some parts, or the disc won't load at all.

also, the truehd track automatically flags for dynamic range compression (DRC) with certain audio receivers (mostly onkyo and denon models).

paramount is asking retailers to return what was already sent out, and the studio is shipping a new batch of discs.

Paramount reassured me this morning that they will meet the street date. According to them, they had to re-press a batch of defective discs that would not play in certain Sony and Samsung players. If you ordered on-line, you probably got a notice cancelling your order. If somehow you already got a disc and it doesn't play, ask Paramount for an exchange.

I have yet to find out if the newly pressed discs also correct the audio concern, wherein the TrueHD soundtrack flags certain Onkyo and Denon amps to compress the dynamic range (it automatically triggers the receiver's "Night Listening" mode). But that's a minor affliction easily resolved with the push of a button on the remote. The disc not playing is another thing.

Regarding what the problems were, I heard that they weren't playing on certain players at all and other players were creating excessive load times.

Cool, thanks for the info guys.

The TrueHD track was automatically triggering the Night listening mode? I didn't know they could even do that. You learn something new everyday.

I have a copy...the only issue I have come across is a very slight stutter as you go from chapter one to chapter two on my Sammy.

That will tech people to NOT TO BUY SONY and Samsung players...

My Funai clone works on all disks. I'm assuming the Panasonic wouldn't be effected either.

Good on Paramount to rescue the day for Sony.

Sorry to be stabbing Sony on this one, when it really is Paramounts problem to a degree.

TrueHD tracks are not supposed to do that, but the TrueHD track can be flagged to tell the automatic dynamic compression to turn on. That's why I think there is a minor problem in the way Paramount's audio engineered mastered the THD. But I cannot prove it, and the audio engineers I talked to last week have not gotten back to me to confirm or deny it's a problem with the disc or the audio mastering. But if you have an Onkyo or Denon receiver, do check the "Night Listening" mode with the button on the bottom of your remote. If it's turn on, turn it off.
