Hello All, looking for some imput

Im going to start fixing up my house in a few months, and im looking to do a super clean installation of my home theater equipment. ive seen in the past websites that sell kits, to put cables in walls, or to run cables neatly etc. that sort of thing... not sure what to call it or where to search, so any info, links or suggestions are apreciated.

Thanks

I know it's presumptuous of me say this, but I advise friends and family NOT to hang the TV on the wall and NOt to put speakers or speaker cables IN the walls. They ignore me, of course.

The problem is that once it's all installed that way, it looks neat and clean, but the first time you decide to change something, to get new speakers or reconfigure their locations, you have a mess on your hands. I'd set the TV on a stand or shelf or cabinet (where you can move it forward or back to obtain the proper viewing distance, get behind it to service it, etc.), and speaker wiring along the baseboards of the walls.

John, very true, HOWEVER, when you have little muchkins (children) that love to touch and push things around, knock things over, etc...the last thing you want is a heavy plasma screen waiting to be pushed over. I can't imagine what it would do if it landed on one of the kids.

That's the one advantage of having it hung up on a wall IMO.

Falcon,

That's what my niece says, and it's what my neighbor says, who both have their TVs hanging on the wall. However, neither of them have surround sound. They use their TV's built-in speakers.

But if you have separate speakers, they would either have to be wall-mounted, too, which is never a good idea (think of replacing them some day, ugh), or sitting out a foot or two in front of the television, not a good idea, either, for correlating accurate sound with the images on screen. (How do you even get the speakers high enough so that the sound appears to be coming from the TV screen and not the floor without putting the speakers on really tall stands?) Also, wall-mounting means never being able to move the TV forward or backward or up or down for optimum viewing. It's a matter of your getting it right the first time, or you deal with the trouble later.

So, yes, if you don't trust kids, maybe wall mounting is the answer. Or keep them away from the TV. Or lock down the TV's stand so it cannot tip over. (Same with external speakers on stands, etc. You have to make them child-proof.)

I have the plasma hanging on one of those "tilting" wall mounts so I can adjust the viewing angle. My speakers are big, I have Paradigm monitor 7 towers with the matching centre channel (which is huge in size) so wall mounting was not an option for those. The way I have the speakers setup I've never had an issue with it not sounding like it's coming from the TV. Besides the sound is so good now adays, and the range you get is quite nice, that it definitely sounds like its coming from the TV. I admit though that my plasma is not up too high, it's just above eye level when sitting down and tilted slightly to get the perfect viewing angle, for me anyway.

To each their own I guess and mine certainly does not have to be perfect. Heck I live in an apartment after all.

I now get what you mean...my aunt with her year and a half son (my cousin), came yesterday to visit, and to my surprise, they are staying with us, no problem... ...until this morning, when I realized that my HD DVD player, my DVD/HTIB (and the front speaker) as well as my 42" HDTV, are at his eye level , when I saw him 'playing' by pushing the HD DVD's power button... and the disc tray ejected, I was thinking to myself, "how am I going to get a new HD DVD player to play my 19 HD DVDs..."...so yeah, having a 'child-proof' home theatre system, is difficult...

i see you points which are good, i dont have the kid problem, but some come over from time to time. i do like the wall mounts...i do not want to hide everything, just some cables, no speakers or anyhting like that.

however i wanted some websites and acesories to make my life easyer.
