What happened to the 10 year plan for PS3? I guess all of the money they lost on PS3 will stop them from unlocking its true potential.
PS4 will be a flop.

Goto Hiroshige has received PSX4 spec info from Japanese developer sources who received preliminary spec from SCEI for developer feedback(whom Goto refuses to name due to NDA).
- SCEI has sent rough PSX4 spec to 3rd party developers for feed back. Based on the description, PSX4 is a Wii-tized PSX3, no more than 2X as powerful.
- SCEI wants to beat Xbox 3 to launch. 2011 is the deadline, or sooner.
- SCEI pulled all its engineers from IBM Texas, and there is no new CELL architecture being developed. PSX4 will use same CELL architecture with improvements.
- SCEI will dump XDR and use standard JEDEC memory type(GDDR3/DDR3) for main memory.

PS4 Based On Existing Cell Processor?
Japanese tech news site PC Watch is reporting that as a cost-saving measure, Sony “has begun seriously considering” basing the upcoming PlayStation 4 on the same Cell processor that currently powers the PS3.
Though citing no sources in particular, PC Watch claims that Sony is currently soliciting developer reactions to the idea. They speculate that while Sony would like to distance themselves from the Cell in the long run, at present they might do well to make use of their existing investment and expand the technical capabilities of the PS3 only moderately — a la the hardware transition from GameCube to Wii — in order to constrain further expenditure.
In a long technical analysis following the report, PC Watch voices the opinion that the PS4’s performance would not increase significantly from that of the PS3 if this is true. While Moore’s Law and the historical rate at which Sony has shrunk processors size would suggest that the Cell processor could reach as many as 32 cores, PC Watch expects that the cost of redesigning the Cell’s layout — which has apparently remained the same as it has shrunk from 90nm to 65nm, and from 65nm to 45nm — would be prohibitive enough that Sony will stick with around 10 cores for the PS4.
PC Watch also apparently heard that Sony is considering standard JEDEC memory for this iteration, as opposed to the PS3’s expensive XDR. They believe this means that the PS4 will use DDR3.
Hardware geeks: if all this is true, how disappointed will you be? Or, perhaps more importantly, what do you estimate a PS4 like this will cost a few years down the road

Depends on who they pay-off to make it a success.

10 year life-cycle doesn't mean that it will be until 2016 before we see PS4... it just means they want the PS3 to be around and selling still in 2016. Just like the PS2.

The "10-year" plan for the PS3 was nothing more than Sony patting itself on the back. I don't think it was ever meant to be taken seriously. It, in this reality anyway, is in no position to be a viable product in ten years as a video game console. That would put Nintendo and Microsoft two full console generations ahead of the PS3 since their cycles are each 5 years. And technology on the CPU/GPU front is pushing ahead so fast right now that the Cell/nVidia combo present now in the PS3 would be so obsolete in comparison to whatever will be the norm in 10 years it would be like comparing an old Intel 80286 CPU to a modern day Core 2 Quad Extrerme processor.

Good points Spoonard. While it may have been true for PS2 it will not for PS3. PS3 is not successful like the PS2. That's where the difference lies. Sony just likes to toot their horn as though what they say must somehow become true because they said it.
