Say... I was just reading up on the Samsung player in the topic one i am intending on buying around Christmas. So apparently, even though the ethernet port is ready to download 2.0, for BD-LIVE, and DTS-MA, but does anyone have any groovy intel as to when that will be available? I heard it is supposed to be sometime this month... but the fact of the matter is that I want to know if this player is going to be worth it, given that it will be upgradeable in the future. If anyone knows - or has this player and wants to fill me in about it as far as quality is concerned - please tell, I would be most appreciative.

Oh, please don't try to shy me away towards the PS3, because I still do not want to get that - as I have said before, I don't want to get a game system for the purpose of playing Blu-Ray movies.

Czech,

Go to http://www.avsforum.com/, the AVS Forums, and type in the search box "Samsung BDP-1500." You'll undoubtedly get your answer there because there are forums devoted to just about every audio-video product available, where people ask just such questions.

I currently own this player and have upgraded it once as far as the firmware is concerned. You can go on the Samsung website and find out what updates are available and probably do a contact us question to get the answer straight from them. The player itself is in the top 5 for standalone players on cnet and I have enjoyed mine thus far. The load times are a little slow(not bad) and the playback for me has been very nice. The one thing you should be aware of is that the upconversion on this player from my experience has been less than great. It dosen't do a bad job, but for upconversion purposes does not compare with an old HD-DVD player, thus letting me down slightly. I personally would recommend this player if you want a blu-ray player and don't want to pay the higher end prices. Good luck

It looks like they brought out the firmware update for profile 2.0 today. On the samsung website they marked the update 10/7/2008. For about $238(amazon) it seems like a very nice choice for standalone. I'm very tempted.

Well, this is awesome that I asked and soon enough the update comes around in a timely manner. So what are the perks of the 2.0? I hope it's BD-LIVE and DTS-MA... 'cause at this rate it's looking like a solid bet that this is the player of choice for sure. Like you, I am tempted - well, still planning on getting it!!!

PS - I got some intel at work (this being Wal-Mart of course) that there WILL be a beneficial Blu-Ray promotion of some kind around the Christmas season. My department manager was real plain about it, but assured me that he was told from some higher-ups he knows. This is working out for me better all the time!

Yes, the website said BD Live support in this update. However, it adds that a 1GB USB memory drive must be plugged into it to activate BD Live features. O well, flashdrives are cheap. Samsung is even cheaper for not including a flash chip inside, lol.

Let me know what you find if any new news on this special sale or promotion Walmart will be having. I can wait for a good sale. Thanks.

Well going back to the player in question, I am getting a special discount for Christmas... they allow me to have an extra 10% off one item, so the player is going to be below $240 (subtotal). Plus, availability of the item is not going to be too much an issue because I am expecting nearly four dozen more of them at some point (this is the one player I sell the most because of the features it has, and that it's cheaper than the PS3).

Now as for what offers will be in place, it will likely be one of two things.
1. Gift card with purchase so you can buy movies (that one was done before for Father's Day).
2. Free movies with purchase probably a limit on how much each one is, like maximum of $30 each title.

good to hear! yeah, also about that USB flash drive thing, i got a spare or two handy, so it won't be any biggie. alas, another weakness that HD-DVD had tackled... onboard storage of downloads. pity.
