Quote:Bladerunner, I was referring to the original Cowboy Junkies and Leonard Cohen tunes that stood out the most because they had multiple plays (and songs) throughout the movie (including intro and endings).

gotcha.

btw. was robert downey jr.s performance in THIS movie not incredible as well!? (he was freakin hilarious!) somebody needs to give this guy an award.

other great performances by "jr"

Quote:Anyway, I was a little disappointed in the movie Iron Man itself as well. I think it might have been a bit over hyped. Again perhaps with all the talk and buzz, and the 95% fresh rating at rotten tomatoes or whatever it was, gave me some pretty high expectations. I expected a great film, but it just turned out to be an enjoyable popcorn fun flick.

That's exactly what I felt of TDK...oh well, I'd take Stark arguing with the fire extinguisher robot over Batman's raspy voice any day...

IM boasts a good transfer I mean, I watched Ratatouille a day after Iron Man, and Rat blows IM away, but is really good for a live action movie.

mvckalel, compared to even older HD releases like Ĉon Flux, Hot Fuzz, I Robot, and about 100 more titles... this Iron Man transfer doesn't even come close. IMO of course

scholars and historians generally agree that the aesthetics of "silent" movies (i.e. movies without dialogue, which doesn't mean that they didn't have sound) were about to reach an apex when sound literally hobbled movies. because recording technologies were so new and unreliable, the camera had to become stationary again. from a visual standpoint, movies became very, very static and didn't regain the free movement of the "silent" era until a decade or two had passed.

"singin' in the rain" is an entertaining overview of what i just described.

Eddie, you should see me with my HD camcorder. Reaching an "apex" doesn't quite describe it.

falcon..^^^ cool picture. bumper cars?

eddie..you said that sound ruined movies..period, in your original post. but now you're saying that for a "time period" they were ruined because the tech. sucked? gotcha.

Blade, thanks. Although I didn't take that pic, found it on the net. I was trying to express how bad some of my home videos are. :p That's without any Corona either.

Eddie, what would movies be without THX sound in theatres? Even the 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound systems we have at home?

I hear what you're saying though, back then when sound was made available in movies, people may have focused on it (sound) so much that the picture became secondary for a while. Still, there's nothing like being immersed in todays movie theatres with crystal clear surround sound, IMO.

This is a transfer? So they made the DVD version in SD then transferred to Blu? That doesn't make any sense.

falcon,

you can see/hear for yourself. "silent" movies are widely available on dvd. the four-disc version of "ben-hur" includes the silent version from the 1920s. you can see that the camera movement is very dynamic and that the cutting is very rapid, especially during the chariot race. buster keaton, charlie chaplin, and harold lloyd's comedies are as funny as ever, even without dialogue.

if you can't get into "old" movies, then just watch a recent favorite with the sound off. you usually have the option of watching with subtitles if you want to "follow the story".

sound can be very distracting. some movies have such amped up surround sound mixes that even i look around the room to follow the sounds. this means that my attention is taken away from the screen. also, it has gotten to the point where movie audio hurts my ears when i watch movies in a theatre. i almost walked out on "get smart" and "the dark knight" because the explosions made me cringe. it's getting to a point where i hate new movies--not necessarily because the movies are bad but because they are physically overbearing.
