Terrence Howard is out, Don Cheadle is in...

Don Cheadle is stepping in to replace Terrence Howard in "Iron Man 2," Marvel Studios' sequel to its summer blockbuster.

In the movie, Howard played Jim Rhodes, Tony Stark/Iron Man's best friend and future armor-clad hero War Machine. One scene featured Howard looking at a silver suit of armor and saying "Next time," a line that caused great delight for fans.

But there will be no next time for Howard.

Marvel had no comment, but sources close to the deal said negotiations with Howard fell through over financial differences, among other reasons. Marvel, which had wanted to work with Cheadle, then decided to take the role in another direction and approached the actor, who is shooting Antoine Fuqua's "Brooklyn's Finest" with Richard Gere and Ethan Hawke.

Rhodes is expected to play a larger part in the sequel, which is rumored to go beyond high-tech villains. Justin Theroux is writing the screenplay.

Jon Favreau is returning as director, and Robert Downey Jr. is expected back as billionaire industrialist Stark/Iron Man. Gwyneth Paltrow also is expected to be back as Stark's assistant, Pepper Potts.

Cheadle doesn't give off that Military Vibe that Howard does. I like Cheadle as an actor so I'll give him a chance but I really liked Howard as Rhodes.

I think "Mr. T" may have been a better choice.

I like Gary Coleman. He could be like "Tattoo" in the old Bond flick.

terrence howard is an idiot. the "iron man" movies are the biggest things to happen to favreau, downey, and howard, and for any of the three to back out is like saying no to a drink of water after ten days in the desert.

AGREED posters:

Not that he wasn't doing alright but Howard like the rest got a big boost in their careers from Ironman. Now he turns down a sure to be blockbuster. The dude is crazy. Same thing happened with Pierce Brosnan when he demanded too much. They changed bonds, lol.

Blockbusters don't matter in Wasilla Alaska since there are no movie theatres -- you actaully have to drive 40-miles into Anchorage. Sarah Palin can actually see the movie theatre from her house!

Yeah, I'm surprised Howard turned the part down. It is really a stupid move in his part. I certainly don't see $59.2-million in his future.

I'm surprised he turned it down also. There will probably be another 2 Iron Man movies at least and his character was due to take a more prominent role in the second movie so basically it was money in the bank for him.

Unless the studio got really greedy.

I don't think that Howard's role in Iron Man was his best (as you semi explained). The roles to me that defined him as an actor were Hustle and Flo, Crash, and maybe Four Brothers. I think the only one that got a boost out of Iron Man was RDJ.

i dont agree with tony often, but i gotta say im with him. Howard showed his skill in every movie exept for iron man, the role was cool, but didnt give him too much... in the sense as serious acting. so i guess is not just a paycheck for him

also thanks to Pierce Brosnan for the new bonds!!!! thank you thank you thank you so much Pierce Brosnan
