okay i have to vent, i just bought a new sony surround sound system for my house, set up the ps3 to it no problem! went to hook up the hddvd player and couldnt get any sound to come from it, read directions, still nothing. For the life of me i couldnt get sound to come out of it when it was playn hddvds. But sound worked for reg dvds, and cd's..... go figure! So long story short i had to go in the hddvd setting and changed it for PCM to bitstream(toke me 2 hrs to figure this out). But the surround system decodes PCM no problem cause thats what my ps3 setting are on. SONY hates hddvd i swear.

ahhh. the old "i just got a new piece of gear, and am soo excited to hook it up syndrome". yeah, many of us have felt this pain toyotaguy. you get that piece of gear, unwrap it with the uptmost precision..marveling how "shiny and new" it looks..how kick ass it is..it smells like a baby's ass.

but then you remember that you actually have to hook the damn thing up, and the emotion that was once excitement, suddenly turns to stress. because you just wanna play with the damn thing. you look over at your rack, and realize that it may indeed fit in "that spot" so you carefully take your prized possesion over..and begin to ease its way in..taking great care not to scratch it..hurt it.

and then..the f***ing dog gets in your way (afterall he is your BEST friend and wants to share this glorious momment with you.) so you may yell at him to "get out of the way", you may even kick him a bit.

finally after sweating balls, you get the darn thing in..and for some odd reason..it just doesnt work right. ahhh man. "yes"..we all feel your pain.

(fast forward five years later.)
that very same piece of gear is now sitting in your driveway..all beat and scratched to hell. and on top of it lies a piece of tape..with the words.."works great! five bucks"

That's a rookie mistake Scionguy! I'm just teasing! Were you using the HDMI output? It should have worked. I know with the Toshiba's that if you do not turn on the HDMI audio passthrough or you will get nothing. That's what I had to do with mine. It didn't matter if I had PCM or bitstream slected.

Why did you buy Sony for sound?

i bought a sony surround suound system cause it sounded great, lol. My system has 3 hdmi in and one out to tv, i couldnt find anything in the same price range with that. I have hdmi audio pass threw on but it wont work when the hddvd player is set on pcm for some reason.

here's another bit of humor:

look. i'm a clean freak when it comes to my gear. it must look tip top and ready to show at all times. even when it is turned off.

last year when i bought my ps3..i did all of the things mentioned in my above post, and ended up placing the unit on a half inch thick, "smoked glass" crystal base, on the floor. (the rack was full, plus it looked rather cool "hovering" out there in front). i then went out to the local meijer and purchased the best "microfiber plus extra stuff that didnt make any sense"..FEATHERDUSTER, that money could buy. (i hate dust..your equip hates dust)

i would run that featherduster over my equipment every other day, making sure to REALLY hit the ps3, because it was new, and it was the baby. i did this for a few months and all seemed good. then came my daughters slumber party...

as you can probably guess, i had to move the ps3 for the night so it wouldnt be crushed by a bunch of crazy little girls. no big deal. so..i unhooked the unit, and took it up to my bedroom and sat it on the floor in front of the window.

the next day i awoke in horror. as i was coming out of the deep sleep i looked over at the ps3 glistening in the sunlight. (i had never seen it in the sunlight, because my theater room is dark). the unit looked like sh*t. the top of my brand new baby had been scratched all too hell from my featherdusting!!!

i was hurt man...bad.
