Sorry Blades, but no joke, it was only $100 and the unit has run like a charm. Now, I didn't buy speakers as I already had that covered, but yes, the receiver was only $100 -- perhaps I shouldn't have worded it as "home theatre", sorry. lol
Nevertheless, it's been a stand-up machine and has just as many home theatre audio settings as the FONY I previously owned. It has plenty of audio effects for sports and movies and has been worth evey dime I spent. If I were to give a review I'd certainly give it the thumbs up. So, IMO, Insignia does make a halfway decent product.
Let me put it this way, the FONY I owned for four years (spent $500 to purchase) had a fuse blow in the first year, then the back-end channels blew and then the headphone jack blew. I used to live in an apartment, so if I was up at 2am and wanted to watch a movie I'd use the headphones -- therefore I was a little ticked-off when that went out. So yeah, I went through a few hundered dollars in repairs over the four years. I spent $100 on the Insignia and have never had a problem, notta', nothing, zero issues. Therefore, which product do you think has been worth the money spent? As they say, don't knock it till you try it.

View profile »First off i was'nt bashing the name. I have owned many off brand products and have enjoyed them very much. I even prefer generic food (except the meat) because it often tastes just as good, and sometimes even better than the real thing. I was just curious about the price point of that Insiginia reciever that you own, for i personally have never found a product at that point to sound like anything other than a tin can. But you are right. I have never heard yours, so i cannot really comment on it. If it works for you, then i'm good.
Second. Please don't tell me that you have been basing your opinion of Sony on that one "lame duck" product that you had. Sometimes things (even really expensive things) just come off of the line defective. It's usually due to human error in the plant that it was made. Who knows, maybe that particular reciever was made on a friday, and the bloke who put it together had other things on his/her mind at the time..like drunken sex for example.
I have owned many Sony products over the years, and not one has given me any problems. Take my yellow waterproof sports Sony boombox for example..Senior year/highschool/1991..myself and about 30 other classmates went to Panama city Florida for spring break. That thing took a f**king POUNDING for a week straight (dropped, kicked, burned, burried in sand, puked on) and still purred like a kitten once back in Oh.
My point is this.."Don't knock it until you try it atleast 3 times."
(btw..i no longer buy sony products, except PS3/PSP.. i just don't care for them anymore.)

No, I didn't think you were kncoking the product, I thought you were just questioning the price. Granted, when I purchased it, even I was astonished how cheap it was. I mean, the unit is as big and bulky as any receiver on the market and it physically looks like it should cost much more than it did. None the less, it's been a pretty stand up product for being so cheap. It was Wolfen who made the comment that Insignia was junk because it's the big, ego macho man thing to say when you probably own a bigger named product. It's easy to make a claim like that when you have no expereince owning the cheaper product because it makes him feel good to act like he has something so much better than everyone else.
As far as I'm concerned, buying any electronics item is like buying fruit, you never know what you're going to get. Even big named brands can end up lemons, and in my experience SONY has made plenty of lemon products. Even if my Insignia receiver died tomorrow it will have cost me around 14-cents per day to run, so IMO that's a damn reliable product! Plus it sounds as every bit as good as the $500 FONY I owned over four-years.

That is certainly true! One of the sole reasons I ended up with my Panasonic Palsma was because, IMO, it looked much better than anything on the lot -- including any of the FONY Barffia's.

One of the funny things is, Eddie, many people think and assume Japanese electronic products are superior to everyone else just because they're Japanese. Now, people can all make jokes about the Chinese cloning Japanese products but what they don't realize -- do some serious history research -- is the Japanese started out "cloning" American electronics decades ago. They were cheaper at the time, just like Chinese electronics, and they took their time to gain the respect of American consumers. The Chinese are basically doing the same thing as the Japanese started doing over 30+ years ago, so why should anyone consider their products to be garbage in the first place? I mean, China is, afterall, one of our biggest traders in the industrial market.
I suppose the next ass comment from FUD passers will be the Insignia/Funai players are all painted with led-paint! lol
