I have a Mitsubishi DLP TV with a built-in over-the-air HDTV tuner and I'm interested in getting a high-definition DVR to use with it. I've googled around and, to my surprise, haven't discovered many options. What I have found is either very expensive (TiVo's HD DVR) or no longer in production. How can I get basic over-the-air HDTV reception plus VHS-like recording for the upcoming digital switchover?

You might subscribe to Comcast or Direct TV.

Thanks John, but I have heard that (OTA) recording options for HD TV are very limited. With the only available two options being rather expensive ($300-$600) and are the ONLY options without having to subscribe to the satellite and cable providers, which is what I was hoping to avoid. Any other ideas?

I tried to research a solution for you but couldn't find anything. As John stated HD cable or HD satellite are great choices, but judging by you post I'm guessing that you want to to record OTA HD broadcasts and not use cable. I also have a Mitsubishi 1080p DLP and I once had HD cable but due do rising cable costs I decided to go with standard cable. With three simple upgrades to my second desktop PC I was able to build a HD DVR.

HD Video Card was $60
500 gig HDD $55

HD TV Tuner $95http://www.amazon.com/Hauppauge-1183-HVR-1600-Internal-Recorder/dp/B000OTJUNK/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1225007900&sr=8-3 and it comes with a remote.

Your Own Personal Digital Video Recorder!
With the included software, you can easily record TV shows to your hard disk using MPEG-2. Several recording options are available depending on your playback needs higher quality video requires more disk space. Generally, 5 GB of disk space is used per hour of ATCS digital TV recordings. Thanks to the built-in hardware MPEG-2 encoder, your PC continues to run at full speed even while recording.

DVI-I cable $10

I also have a HP M7750N Multi Media PC that costs about $400 that is my home theatre DVR. It has everything you need right out of the box.
