"As a final thought on the current state, I was recently sent an anyalyst's report on market acceptance of Blu-Ray discs. The prediction was that by 2010, some 40 percent of optical disc dollar volume would be from high definition BD. Unless per disc prices drop precipitously, I would bet against that, but the reason cited was "sub $200 players." Once again the sucker punch. HD video processing is MORE complicated than NTSC, not less, nevermind the obligatory up-conversion of SD to HD at that price point. Take away chassis/transport harware costs from those necessary to sell a box at $200, and you have a zip point-nothin' left for image processing, which afterall is supposed to be the payoff. I seriously doubt that $200 player will endear many consumers with even mediocre eyesight to make the switch."

(The basis for my questioning, and my final statement on the matter. I shall check these players out, for my bedroom..then maybe I can be part of the club/cult too!!! )

bladerunner,

as has been widely reported, important components of the funai clones were provided by panasonic and, yes, sony. the funais were not thrown together just for the heck of it. they are heavy machines with capabilities that profile 1.1 players from the "name" companies lack.

they even have SD card slots on the front so that you can watch photos/videos recorded on SD cards. this also leads me to believe that, when funai makes 2.0 players, consumers can upgrade the memory to as high as SD cards allow.

it's easier inserting SD cards than it is using USB jump drives that stick out of a machine and can be knocked loose or squished when someone walks in front of a blu-ray player or pushes the machine back against the cabinet/wall.

Blade, I don't hate SONY, and I tell you, the Insignia blu-ray player hasn't disappointed me yet. Again, I've only loaded eight movies, and had no problems. Again, load times are good, and no glitches with anything (obviously, BD-Live won't work)...And again, I paid less than $210, and I'm happy with it.

Hey eddie,

They have gone full clearance on the Maggy's in Walmart Canada. They are listed as $197 for new and I saw open box units going for $97! I might pick one of these up for the parents for Christmas! BTW they are still on a 25 inch RCA console that looks like this.

Hey Eddie... yeah, I'm thinking back to earlier this year when I made the following notice to everyone:

> FUNAI '$300' Blu-ray player by Q2

"The optical head for the unit will be provided by Sony and the core system will be the Matsushita / Panasonic UniPhier chipset."

Remember? How people were making gripes about these players would be of poor quality, just because they had a pre-conceived opinion of the name Funai? (LOL) And yet now, the player/owner feedback is in and these clones are being praised for their very good-to-excellent quality, and WITHOUT the playback 'issues' experienced by the Samsungs. How's that for quality!

I bet we see them for $150 come Black Friday (2 weeks away).
