Hey Tim, here in Canada it does affect your credit rating. A few years ago I went through some hard core credit counceling before I moved to the US, and that was one of the major issues. The more useless credit I occupied, It worked against the good credit I was trying to build. Things may be different in the US, but I know carry that same mentality today. Really how much credit do people really need?, or even deserve to have?

Tim,
Stop going to Wal-Mart for your accounting. Yes any inquiry by a credit card company on your credit score hurts your credit, whether you get approved or not. Yes having a credit card you don't use hurts your credit score. Yes having some credit cards for more than three years, and using them, helps your credit score. Hire a real accountant.

Do you actually think I'm going to take your advice over a professional? Not to mention, my accountant has done a lot to help me get awesome tax returns at the end of the year. Again, I've been explained the details in credit plenty of times from a "professional" and I'm not going to get into argument over the issue.

okay, this is getting silly. Applying and receiving a new credit card reduces your credit score by about 3 points. Not a big deal unless you do this many, many times, or you are right in between a good score, neutral, or bad score. Only 5 different factors are known to what goes into a credit score (FICO), otherwise people would be able to manipulate their credit score. Generally, those 5 known factors are 35% payment history, 30% outstanding debt, 15% length of credit history, 10% type of credit, and lastly 10% for new credit. So the 3 points number comes from the estimate of new credit having an effect of roughly 10% on your credit score. This info comes directly from the consumer credit counseling service.

so everyone is correct. new credit will make a difference, just won't be a noticeable difference for most people. Also, canceling newer debt, such as canceling the sony card after my free movies show up, will have little effect since they want to see lengthier credit relationships. Canceling a long time existing card that you no longer utilize, will have a larger effect.

Tim,

Being an accountant doesn't mean you know about credit issues. Its great that he does good tax returns, what that has to do with credit I have no idea. There are plenty of organizations on the web that you can research what goes into your credit score. It takes literally 27 seconds to find. A heck of a lot easier than having to go into Wal-Mart to speak a "credit accountant" which I didnt think existed.

Umm, yes it does. A good accountant gives advice on how you should handle your money and helps you keep your credit in line. You don't actually think these people just get paid to count numbers only do you? Again, not taking advice from someone that obviously doesn't have a clue what a professional accountant actually does.

Go ahead, insult me with Walmart one more time you jack-ass. ..!..

I stand corrected, I called Wal-Mart to schedule my accounting session. Its pretty nice he gives you accounting advice, gets you a nice hair cut, and its only 19.99. (including a free google search for credit reporting)

this deal is still good. get it while you can.

the_dvd_chef: there is no purchase necessary. i got my card a while back, and i have not used it once. let's say the fair market value is $15 per blu-ray. i got $75s' worth of blu-rays for nada.
