Robert Downey Jr. and Don Cheadle Sign On for The Avengers

Marvel Entertainment has just announced that Robert Downey Jr and Don Cheadle have signed on for both Iron Man 2 and The Avengers. Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau will also executive produce The Avengers. As previously reported, Cheadle will be replacing Terrence Howard as Colonel James “Rhodey” Rhodes.

The announcement also comes with the first look at a plot synopsis tease: ” “In a movie event, The Avengers will bring together the super hero team of Marvel Comics characters for the first time ever, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk and more, as they are forced to band together to battle the biggest foe they’ve ever faced.” Who could that be? With Hulk on the listed team line-up, does that mean that the big green guy is out as a possibility?

Iron Man 2 hits theaters on May 7th 2010, and The Avengers hits theaters on July 15th 2011. Check out the full press release after the jump.

What would be a good villain for an Avengers movie? I mean a villain (or group of them) that could stand against The Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, and whoever else they decide to toss into the mix?

Pretty much. I'm not a huge comic buff but... I'm sure the Avengers have some sort of Nemesis/Nemesi... Nemesis's... Nemesis'?

They had to restrain the Hulk in the comics for their first challenge, I heard a rumor this is what one of the new ones will be about. Whether that will be Iron Man 2 or Captain America I don't know. All I know is Cap Am will be great if done right.

I wonder if Edward Norton will be the Hulk, I'd be surprised if he did but it would be VERY cool.

Who do you guys think should be Captain America?

I would say the villain could be Ultron. He's usually able to take on the entire Avengers roster by himself. I hope they don't just stick in a bunch of villains like a anti-Avengers, though.

I heard Norton is interested in Incredible Hulk 2 and Avengers. He's just waiting for the call.

I thinkt he only way an Avengers movie could work with all the heroes and villains in it is if it was done in a similar fashion to LOTR. A trilogy of three hour long movies. If you are gonna stuff a movie so full of content at least make the movie long enough to be able to still float. And the story could easily fill up three movies like that. I mean c'mon, they have 40 years of stories already written!
