Ok, that's the one I have, so this $899 one is a few years old. Shit, I need to let my parents know just incase my father is strict about it being 1080pee. Say "Pee", now say it two-times fast.

Well, in all honesty, choosing any HDTV is ultimately what appeals best to your own eyes. No matter what the specs, it really comes down to what best visually appeals to you. Therefore, don't rush into it, take the time to really digest what you see and take notes if you have to. When I shopped, I knew what brands to look for and I took the time to really look at the color and detail of each TV. The first one I viewed was a Sharp AQUOS LCD -- it wasn't all that bad and it was supposed to have a good view radius. However, say at center is 90-degrees, about at 60-degees the picture would seem faded and washed-out, but past 60 the picture would come back. It's the little things like that you want to take the time to check for.

After viewing some other well known brands, the Panny was the one that did the WOW for me. Keep in mind, though, that's just my opinion, so definately shop but shop real slow.

Well, we won't know for sure until next Thursday's Thanksgiving newspaper ads, but I would think it's a current 2008 model. Last year, the discounted 768p Panny plasma (around $1100 at Best Buy, Fry's Electronics etc) was that year's current 768p model released in the summer. And Panasonic at the moment only has ONE 768p 50" plasma available (the one I linked to on pg. 3), which is at the usual discounted price of $1399, so I could easily see -this- model turn out to be the one for the BF sale - LINKED HERE. Sure, I could be wrong, but am basing this info on last year's Panny plasma sale (which was a 2007-year model). And now it's Christmas 2008, so I figured...

Here's a resource for BF info - Black Friday Ads

From your resource, it says this: "Panasonic Viera 50" Widescreen 720p Plasma HDTV". It is an older model, as I got my 1080pee Panasonic in March. Oh my, I must let my folks know! The world will end!!!!

How do you really know it's an older model Tim?

FYI: the "720p" moniker is used all the time to describe 768p TVs. It got started years ago with rear-projection models (and early LCDs from Sharp) that do have exactly 1270x720 resolution. However, the industry soon was able to squeeze a little more resolution with FLAT PANELS, and since 2004, all flat panel LCD and plasma HDTVs have either offered 768p (960,000 pixels), or 1080p (2.1 million pixels). The correct resolution is 768p, not "720p".

And so, still to this day, you will see the "720p" description given to flat panels that actually offer 768p (1366x768) resolution... like that Panny plasma I've linked to. So I'd be surprised if it's an older model. Except for this one 768p Panny plasma, their current 42" and 50" 2008 lineup in plasma is all 1080p (and higher priced). Look for the model# in next Thursday's Thanksgiving newspaper ads - which is usually the thickest newspaper delivered due to all of the many color insert ads from all of the retailers. Consumers are enticed to plan their next day's shopping while digesting that great turkey dinner.

Another reason I feel it's a 2008 model on sale, is the same set is shown on Panasonic's TV website (for this 2008 model year) - VIEW HERE

Is it important in the first place? The difference is it's listed as a 720p and I purchased a 1080p back in March. I would only assume the 720p models would be older models when compared to the 1080p models. Resolution is the issue here, so it really doesn't matter how old it may be.

And I made a small error about the "pixel" count above...

Here's an overview -
480i/p = 852x480 (EDTV)
720p = 1280x720 (960,000 pixels) (HDTV)
768p = 1366x768 (1,049,088 pixels) (HDTV)
1080i/p = 1920x1080 (2,100,000 pixels) (HDTV)

Note: nothing is actually broadcast in 768p. The broadcast industry uses 480i, 720p, or 1080i. However, 480p, 768p and 1080p are what the native resolutions used for HDTVs (the various scaling resolution).

Well, I'm only wanting to clarify for those potentially interested in it, that's it's likely a 2008 model. Your set is 1080p (and a different model obviously). Again, I'd be surprised if the $899 Panny plasma on sale next week at Best Buy (w/768p resolution), is actually a "2007" older model. Based on their past yearly annual sales, it's likely to be their cheapest 50" model in the current lineup (that's not 1080p), on sale. And their website only show that ONE particular 50" model (that's not 1080p), so I'm assuming it's the one on sale next week. We'll just have to wait for the ads to confirm.

haha. this is EXACTLY why we are here! you walk into a bb and there are TONS of monitors set to WOW you in "torch" mode with nary a remote to be found! there they are, all hanging on a wall, you look around for "help" but then realize that you are dealing with former fast food employees that are only there to look cool and don't know a damn thing about what they are dealing with.

i cannot SEE with my own eyes unless they give me the damn remote!

i know that you paid alot more for it than we are likely to pay, but don't let that sour you buddy. i paid $1000 bucks for a pioneer portable dvd player with a 7" screen back in 2000!
